ADDRESSING INEQUITY & DISCRIMINATION: Youth’s Proposed Solutions<br />
Policy & System Change<br />
• Make services and supports in all systems easier to access for youth w<strong>it</strong>h disabil<strong>it</strong>ies<br />
• Ensure that services and supports for youth w<strong>it</strong>h disabil<strong>it</strong>ies are guided by what youth want<br />
and how they want to achieve their goals<br />
• Prohib<strong>it</strong> services, shelters and drop-ins from banning any youth on the basis of their ident<strong>it</strong>y<br />
or challenges they face (including LGBTQ2S+ youth and youth facing mental health or<br />
addiction challenges)<br />
• Establish accountabil<strong>it</strong>y mechanisms w<strong>it</strong>hin systems to identify and address discrimination<br />
and inequ<strong>it</strong>y, and involve youth in these assessments<br />
Investments<br />
• Only fund services and programs whose policies and practices are inclusive of all groups<br />
accessing services (e.g. LGBTQ2S+ youth) and who employ inclusionary hiring practices<br />
Professional Conduct & Training<br />
• Penalize landlords and employers for discrimination and develop accountabil<strong>it</strong>y mechanisms<br />
so landlords and employers cannot continue to harm youth<br />
• Provide ongoing anti-discrimination, LGBTQ2S+ allyship, and cultural competency training<br />
for all professionals working w<strong>it</strong>h youth (e.g., teachers, social workers)<br />
• Provide landlords and employers training on anti-oppression and how to best work w<strong>it</strong>h youth<br />
Interventions<br />
• Provide employment and training programs for youth who face discrimination on the basis<br />
of mental health status and/or disabil<strong>it</strong>y<br />
