ESSAYS, DRAFTING AND TIMELINES<br />
Your teachers will set specific deadlines for assignments<br />
and essays to be completed and submitted by. Extensions of<br />
time are usually only granted in cases of illness and extreme<br />
circumstances. It is imperative for you to set in place a<br />
definite Timeline for your drafting. Use the 5 E’s of Learning<br />
in your planning and execution.<br />
Drafting is a process vital to optimizing the quality of<br />
assignments. It authenticates your learning. Your teachers<br />
can see the development of your thinking and enhances your<br />
understanding.<br />
Following is a dependable method of organizing timelines:<br />
Day 1 – write due dates on your Year <strong>Planner</strong> and put<br />
reminders in your phone.<br />
Micro – within 2 days; ENGAGE<br />
• understand the topic<br />
• write what it means to you in your own words<br />
• brainstorm possible resources<br />
• obtain a copy of the assessment criteria for the subject.<br />
Mini – within 4 days; EXPLORE<br />
• plan your research strategy<br />
• locate references/resources<br />
• begin your research.<br />
Short – within first week; EXPLAIN<br />
• collect all information<br />
• correlate data under main points<br />
• develop sentences and then paragraphs<br />
• plan and assemble first draft.<br />
Medium – within 2 weeks; ELABORATE<br />
• if the subject assessment criteria allows, ask<br />
your teacher for feedback on the first draft<br />
• analyse comments<br />
• read through it with a parent/friend to<br />
improve phrasing/vocabulary<br />
• revise draft.<br />
Long – within 3 weeks; EVALUATE<br />
• discuss interpretations with friends<br />
• evaluate any feedback<br />
• complete final.<br />
Always mark your timeline stages in different<br />
colours on the Year <strong>Planner</strong> in your planner.<br />
The stages can be adjusted according to the timespan.<br />
Following this approach will reduce pressure and help you to<br />
get results. You can always improve on a draft and remember<br />
to begin the task on Day 1.<br />
