PARTS OF SPEECH<br />
Nouns<br />
• are words which name a person, place, thing,<br />
feeling or idea.<br />
• There are two main types of nouns.<br />
Proper Nouns – used to name a particular person,<br />
place, thing, feeling or idea. They begin with a<br />
capital letter.<br />
Common Nouns – used to name everyday general<br />
persons, places, things, feelings or ideas.Common<br />
nouns can be split into two smaller groups.<br />
Collective Nouns – used to name a group or<br />
collection.<br />
Abstract Nouns – used to name feelings or ideas.<br />
e.g. France, bird, Billy, sadness<br />
e.g. Disneyland is a large theme park.<br />
e.g. The man locked the door<br />
e.g. a herd of cattle<br />
a flock of sheep<br />
e.g. happiness, honesty, toughness, patience<br />
Pronouns • are words which take the place of a noun. e.g. Naming (Nominative)<br />
He climbed the stairs. (I, you, he, she, it, we,<br />
they)<br />
e.g. Receiving (Objective)<br />
Bill told her to go. (me, you, him, her, it, us,<br />
them)<br />
e.g. Having (Possessive)<br />
The watch is his. (my, mine, your(s), his, her(s),<br />
its, our(s), their(s)<br />

Acronyms<br />
• are words which show the action and the time of<br />
that action, past, present or future.<br />
• are words which describe nouns highlighting<br />
colour, size, state and number.<br />
• are words which describe in what manner, when,<br />
where.<br />
• they tell us more about what happened.<br />
• are words which describe how a noun or pronoun<br />
is related to another word in a sentence.<br />
• prepositions can also be used as adverbs.<br />
• are words which join words, phrases, clauses and<br />
sentences together.<br />
• are words which interrupt other words or phrases.<br />
• they are often called interjections, and followed by!<br />
• are groups of letters which are put in front of a<br />
word to change its meaning.<br />
• are groups of letters which are put at the end of a<br />
word.<br />
• they change the word to another part of speech.<br />
• often the spelling of the word changes.<br />
• are words that have been shortened by:<br />
- leaving out the vowels<br />
- using the first letters<br />
• they are very useful when taking notes.<br />
• are words formed using the first letters from other<br />
words.<br />
Vowels • are the letters a, e, i, o, u.<br />

She stopped at the door.<br />
He needs help now.<br />
She will lift the book.<br />
e.g. The old lady looked out of the front window of<br />
her white house.<br />
e.g. He spoke quietly for a while.<br />
e.g. The pain was much worse than first thought.<br />
e.g. The boys ran up the hill.<br />
e.g. The dog sat down.<br />
e.g. I ate dinner before leaving for the movie.<br />
(and, because, before, after, until, or, nor, but,<br />
unless, though, yet, so, for, when, while, as,<br />
although, since, if, where)<br />
e.g. Oh! What have I done?<br />
e.g. John was given an antidote for the snake bite.<br />
(pre, anti, mis, re, in, trans, dis, un, sub, fore,<br />
com, bi, tri, counter, de, im, uni, ir, it, super, tele)<br />
e.g. Silent, silently – changed from an adjective to<br />
an adverb.<br />
legal, legalize – change from an adjective to a<br />
verb.<br />
repeat repetition – changes from a verb to a<br />
noun and a spelling change.<br />

ence, ance, ant, ship, ive, ory, ee)<br />
