Mrs. Byron Fancy was the key leader of dance music and song in the elementary
division. Teachers helped, particularly Irene Ernst.
The Bridgewater paper on July 2, ’41 noted parents and students gave Mrs. Fancy a
‘ very gracious’ letter of thanks, ‘a very nice white purse and a pair of silk hose’ in
‘appreciation for the splendid instruction given in music..to her music class during
the school year.’
School Sports, Rifle Club-Girls Too
School sports continued, but increasingly at an in-school level. The new sport was
Rifle Club: The club met in the basement of the school, and shot from the prone
position along the length of it. Nobody was injured. Girls participated. When I asked
about her score, Jean Burgoyne [Nickerson] laughed and retorted, “Oh, don’t remind
me of that.”
The 1941-42 Highlight recorded some scores.
The Highlight
The Highlight continued to be printed, but only once or twice a year. And the
published quality was more modest. It was produced on a Gestetner and stapled
together. Miraculously Grace Elliott [her father, Rev Elliott had been Anglican
minister in the mid and late 1930’s] and Bev Reiser [Eisenor], whose mother, Lela
Hyson [Reiser] had taught at the school, and was the sister of Hope Hyson, preserved
some.
One delightful feature of the 1941-42 edition was the clever and perceptive pen
portraits/caricatures of the graduates, drawn by Staff Artist Jean Burgoyne and shown
on the next page.
