The 60’s are remembered as being, more idealistic, wilder and less inhibited. It was
a time of party and rock. It was a time of energy and innovation at the school. The
late ‘60s saw the introduction of School Band, School Newspaper, Reach for The
Top, Driver Education, Winter Carnival, a new name for yearbook-The Bay Window,
Cheer Leaders and Weight Lifting. All except the newspaper were to become part of
the fabric of school life.

Below is a poor quality original on micro film, but it catches the moment.
The information on numbers and instruments is instructive. The four guitars were
replaced by drums when on parade. The newspaper report included a photo under the
heading:

Contribution To Mahone High Band.
Philip Lohnes presented a cheque to Mr. O’Connor. The local newspaper caption
read: Mr. Lohnes gave a percentage of the sales of the Mahone Save Easy
Supermarket. Students had to collect cash register slips to qualify. Mr. O’Connor
teaches math in grades eight and nine.
Mahone Bay’s was the first school band in the region.
Band has a long tradition in the Town, but by the 1960s the once mighty town band
was no more. The tradition was revived by Mike O’ Connor. School band was
established in 1965-6 and continues today, strong as ever in Bayview School.
