In fact it was local son, Clairmonte Zwicker, who introduced the Bill on the floor of the Legislature on Thursday, March 12th 1914 [Proceedings of the House of Assembly, 1914, page 719], and guided the process to an Act two months later. Quick work! Clairmonte Zwicker MLA He was the ‘Political Godfather’ of the new school. Old Station Road had been re-named after him. Alfred Clairmonte Zwicker [1865-1949], called “Mont”, was brother to William [“Bill”] Henry Schneider Zwicker who had the large store, and meeting hall opposite, on Main Street. The family was ‘an old and original one.’ The brothers, including Howard, James, the Rev. Harry and sisters Charlotte and Effie, were direct descendents of Johan Peter Zwicker Snr., the first generation settler. Claimonte narrowly lost in the 1916 provincial election, when Lunenburg County returned one Conservative MLA [an incumbent, Joseph Willis Margeson] and a newcomer Liberal [John J. Kinley of Lunenburg]. This was the provincial change-of-government victory celebrated by C. U. Mader and the young Fred Mosher [see chapter 1]. ‘Mont’ served as Mayor of Mahone Bay, Chair of School Board, 1936-1940, and, later, he was a real estate agent. The Fund Raising $18000 Worth of Debentures • The New School building [the design and construction], the new bell, the needed land, and certainly some fittings and furniture had to be paid for. The $13000 limit set by the public meeting in May 1914 had been unrealistic. • Records show that the cost of the new Bridgewater Town School [completed in 1913] was more than double the $18000 achieved by the founding fathers. How they achieved the new figure approved in the Act is a matter of speculation. Certainly through a process of persistent negotiation! • It makes the last clause of the Act [a public meeting of the ratepayers was not required to confirm proceedings] significant. The Founding Fathers were smart politicians. THERE WAS NO GOING BACK The Debentures Were sold by, or on behalf of, the trustees. No broker was hired. No broker fees paid! Imagine trying that today! • Issued 1914 Matured 1944 5% Interest Payable Half-Yearly • This writer had the good fortune to find a number of the originals, and the Town’s Bond and Coupon Register, dutifully and neatly recording the interest payments, early redemptions and maturity payments. All paid. No problem! The School and Town kept its promises on the ‘promissory notes.’ • Charlie Lohnes, Charlie Begin and ‘Pumpey’ Joudrey signed each one. The $18000 raised in 1914 is equivalent to well over half a million today. The Sale of the Old School: Extra funds came from the sale of the old building. W.H.S. Zwicker’s tender of $3100.00 was accepted on condition the building be removed ‘within a short time,’ and that he should ‘not disturb the stone work of the old foundation.’ An interesting legal case was to transpire! 28
