School Board Amalgamation: 1981-2, The Mahone Bay School Board’s Last Year

The amalgamation movement had started back
in the 1940s. The early 1980s saw its logical
working out. There had been far too many
boards, and far too many of those struggled to
offer complete services to students. So the tradition
that had existed since the Town’s incorporation
in 1919 came to an end. The final
meetings of the town board were 1981-82. The
members were: Philip Lohnes, David Wright and
Chair Virginia Uhlman [elected members], Jenny Watson, Lindy Guild and
Bob Douglas [appointed members]. One of their last actions was to appoint
Edward Mader [photo on left] head custodian. Eddie, [son of Bobby of badminton
coach fame, grandson of policeman and school board chair, and great
grandson of Bluenose rigger, Tom Mader], still leads the maintenance crew
at BayView School. He lived and breathed the old school air as student and
now continued as the building’s chief caregiver.
