For fifteen years, Sharon Knickle was a force on staff as physical education and math teacher as well as coach. District Elementary Champions The Tradition of Both Athletic Excellence and Participation .The 1990-91 County Elementary Champs., and Jr High County Regional Champs. It was an extraordinary undefeated year, for the junior boys winning the county and regional championships well as the following tournaments: Mahone Bay Invitational, Shelburne County Classic, Mahone Bay Lions Invitational, Middleton Heart of the Valley Classic, and Centre Junior Bluenose. Some Extraordinary Mahone Bay Athletes from the ‘80s and ‘90s The tradition of athletic excellence that grew in the 1970s blossomed in the last two decades of the old school. Staff commitment was the envy of many schools and was widespread through Ted Veinot, Sharon Knickle, Carl Henebury, Tony Saurasky, Lowell Ritcey, Gary Mason, Harold Uhlman, Eric Dolliver, Mike Sangster, Jonathan Chiasson, Fred Forsyth, Craig Pottie, Liz Clark. There was “buzz” and ambition. The coaching load was shared. No other school of similar size could boast of a pedigree to match the following: Steven Sayer: Provincial Soccer Player Steven was awarded the school’s Top Male Athlete Award in 1980. (Female MVP) • He represented the school at ‘A’ soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton and track. • He was selected male most valuable player when Mahone Bay won the provincial co-ed water polo championships in 1980. • He went on to play for Team Nova Scotia at the U-16 and U-18 National All-Star Soccer Championships. • His local club teams won provincial club soccer championships and went to National Club Championships at U-16 and U-18.
