1973-4:
The junior and senior badminton clubs were outstanding in many tournaments
with Pamela Nowe, Kathy Nowe, Anne Benedict, Ed Mader, Eric Himmelman,
Kenneth Croft, Ian MacDonald, Wendy Boyd and Susan Pyle all winners at major
tournaments. The Junior Girls were county champions in basketball [Mr. Ritcey,
coach] and volleyball [Mr. Gray, coach].

Sports were high profile. Programs for events were prepared. The school hosted and
went to many tournaments.
The Sports Athletic Banquet
Introduced in 1971, it became a major end of year event, with trophies, awards, guest
speakers and a head table for VIPs.
• Dr. Gib Chapman, Director of Athletics and Head Basketball Coach at Acadia was
the Guest speaker in 1977.
• Mayor Philip Lohnes, a major school booster was at head table.
• What is noticeable is the large number of involved teachers.
• And the leaders of The Student Sports Leader Corps were among the VIPs.
Dr. David Keddy, who sponsored the ‘Home of the Hawks’ yearbook photo (see next
page) was the acting chairman of the school board in its fight against teacher cut-backs
in 1976. He was an enthusiastic and farsighted board member and town councillor from
1973-6, before moving to the U.S.A to continue his profession.
The Banner Year 1976, The Year of The Double
Girls Provincial Champions Volleyball and Basketball, Ivan Carey coached the girls
teams to both championships.
He had joined the staff in September 1974. Noel Dexter had discussed his
application with Vandertoorn and Murphy. They were always on the look out to
add to the “school staff team” He had played for the Mount Allison varsity team,
and was a passionate dedicated coach. Immediately the school teams continued to
improve.
