Chess and Weight lifting
From the cerebral to physical, brain and brawn. Over simplifications are a
history writer’s indulgence! The old school found a place for both in the last
twenty years. The Horner & Associates 1984 report on District School Board
buildings included the weight room in its schematics of Mahone Bay. It was
an institution! Probably no other school had a room of the type. It’s tucked
away in the basement, and this writer found the old metric/ imperial weights
conversion still posted on the wall.
In the 1980s and 1990s the weight lifting club was very much the child of town
police force constable, Neil Cleveland. Neil remembers one strenuous night
when the weight lifting crew literally went through the floor. They had put the
foot through the floor and found the old Second World War air raid shelter
floor.
Whereas chess club was new. There had never been one before. Dave Allen,
Lowell Ritcey and Harold Uhlman were staff members who kept it going.

Computers: At first it was simply word processing. But the whole matter
grew until a computer room was established.
