A Youth Centre, 2003, followed by diverse Youth Activity Groups
The basement of the school was completely remodelled for the Youth Studio
as it came to be called. A comfortable lounge area and an activity were included.
For a year the centre operated until volunteers and numbers of regular
youth users declined: a cycle that has affected the youth clubs in Bridgewater,
Lunenburg and Chester. Its time will come again. However, the Global
Mission Youth Group meets there on Monday nights, and a drama club, a
satellite of Mermaid Theatre meets there on Tuesdays. The drama group is
going to England in the summer of 2007 to be part of a number of Mermaid
presentations.
The Skateboard Park That Came and Went, 2002
The Old School Skateboard Association had the active support of The Mahone
Bay Centre Society when it set up on Town Council property on the old basketball
court at the Old School field. But local residents complained about
lack of structure and supervision, late hours, noise, bad language and there
was talk of illicit drug use. The Town Council refused to cover the cost of liability
insurance and ordered the skateboard park closed.
In the summer Mermaid Theatre School takes place there. The three weeks
school is followed by a local production.
The Mahone Bay Youth Soccer Club uses the field and building throughout
the summer as a centre for games, meetings and fund-raising activities and
for washroom access.
