The Last Graduation Under The Town Board, June 1982 H.V. Corkum had started formal graduation services in 1931 and the tradition had survived, including the Second World War Years. It was to continue until 2000, but the last town system graduation was in 1982. Virginia Uhlman represented the town board. Percy Mosher, who had been classroom teacher, vice-principal, and principal in the 1940s, represented the Lions. Mrs. Ruth Stacey was president of Home and School. The congratulations page in the 1984 yearbook reflected the change in board structure. The signatures include board members [Jennifer Watson and Ralph Hennigar from Mahone Bay] and senior management. Student Council Leadership Rosalie Dowse, the Valedictorian, went on to be student council president at Parkview, before going on to university. The new elementary-junior high continued to seek and train a tradition of leaders and initiators. Philip Watson : From Class Captain to Captain of the Bluenose Philip was in the graduating grade nine class of 1981: he had been at the school since primary. That year, he had been class captain [a student council experiment], school band member, drama club actor [in Lilly Comes To Town], on the yearbook staff [the tongue in cheek Can You Imagine section posed the question ‘……Philip Watson aspiring to be a mortician??], singer and guitarist in the Music festival, and he had played ‘A’ soccer, basketball [alongside future Hall of Famer, Kevin Veinot] and volleyball. He was to keep up the tradition of Mahone Bay’s close connection to the Bluenose. Jenny Watson and Bob Douglas became the Mahone Bay members of the new Lunenburg County District Board. They held the delicate political balance between the evenly pitched Municipality of Lunenburg representatives and the block from the towns and villages of Lunenburg, Bridgewater and Chester. Ralph Hennigar replaced Mr. Douglas. “I’m responsible for the trust to Lunenburg, to Nova Scotia, to Canada.” Chronicle Herald, Feb., 2001 It’s remarkable that just three years ahead of him in school was Michelle Stevens who went on to make the new main sail for Bluenose II. 201
Globe and Mail Award Winner…Michener Award [top journalist] Nominee Another interesting example is Erin Anderssen, student council president, 1985-6. Erin is the great, great, granddaughter of ‘Founding Father, W.F. “Pumpey” Joudrey. She is now on the staff of the Globe and Mail. The Administrators of the 1980s Mike O’Connor and Dave Allen moved on in 1982. For a year, K. Ian MacKinnon was principal and Wayne Veno was vice-principal. Mr. MacKinnon left after one year for personal reasons and the rest of the 1980s was administered by Wayne Veno, principal [left below] and Chris Anderson, vice principal [right below]. They complemented each other, and brought stability and action to the school. Mr.Veno was solid and conservative, Mr. Anderson radical and activist. Mr. Anderson was at the school for ten years. 202
