School Newspaper, 1966-68 Producing a regular school newspaper is an ambitious project. It requires continuous collection, preparation and production. For two years, ’66-68, a group of energetic students did just this. Again, it shows the energy produced at the school in the 1960s. 163
Reach for The Top The phenomenally successful CBC TV show hit the tube in the late 1960s. School teams appeared in competition, answering questions from the academic to trivia. Questions ranged from fine art, science, literature, geography to pop music and current and old TV shows. Students would go through elimination tests at school to vie for the privilege and prestige of representing their school on TV, watched by large audiences of viewers. As a Cheer Leaders With the fine school spirit of the 1960s, organized, formal cheer-leading appeared in 1968. It lasted on and off for a decade. Cheerleaders expanded to junior and senior in 1968-9 164 The First Reach For The Top Team, 1967-68 coach of the Lockeport School team, this writer can vouch for the hours of swatting and memorization needed, and the gruelling time students had under the lights in front of the cameras. Reach for The Top went on through the 1970s.
