Dawn Hartlen, [above, Left] and her predecessor, Brian Fogelson, carried on the band tradition. After Mike O’Connor left in 1982, the benefits of amalgamation were felt when Brian Fogelson and then Dawn Hartlen, both trained band specialists who worked both town schools, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, took hold of the band program and developed both junior/ intermediate [which included elementary students] and senior band through the 1980s and ‘90s. The proud band tradition continues; at present conducted by Gail Lohnes. Senior and Junior Band, 1988, with Brian Fogelson By 1999 Gail Lohnes had three bands with 67 participants. Always Room and a Coach for another team….’P’ for Participation Ted Veinot and the ‘C’ Boys Elementary Sports Teams Similarly, in the 1980s and 1990s, the school fielded elementary soccer and basketball teams, boys and girls and co-ed, sometimes ‘A’, ‘B’ and even ‘C’ teams 206 The team members top right were girls county champions in 1991. Under the coaching of Ted Veinot, Mahone Bay girls, with a whole string of county championships, became the team to beat in the late ‘80s and 1990s. They were Lunenburg-Queen’s champions nine out of twelve years, the last time in 1999. The elementary boys were three times district champions under his coaching. No other coach has such an elementary school basketball record. He also coached soccer when needed, and coached various junior high teams.
