Lloyd Langille went on to graduate from Mahone Bay in 1964, and was to return as a
popular and successful physical education teacher and coach.
Unfortunately, other than badminton, there were not the same opportunities
for girls. There were glee club, Red Cross and canteen at school, CGIT [Canadian
Girls In Training], brownies and guides.
Little League and Church Boys League [C.B.L.] Fill The Gap
Thankfully, Little League and CBL, scouts and cubs filled the gap-for boys. Tom
Ernst was involved in the first two. They started in the mid-1950s and by the ‘60s
were going strong. Ball had its top days in the ‘60s and early ‘70s and has since
faded. CBL is still going strong. So is Tom Ernst.
Principals, Students, Teachers and Activities
Principal: Joe Campbell
Joe Campbell was the permanent replacement for H. V. Corkum. He was young,
energetic, had good discipline at the school, and was popular with students and
townsfolk. Betty Walsh said, “He was a great help to me as a new teacher.”
Unfortunately, he only stayed two years. He had recently married and had a young
daughter. His wife died suddenly and he was distraught. He boarded with Mrs. Phyllis
Nauss, finished his second year, and left to rebuild his life.
He went to the States, got his Masters degree, returned, improved still further his
academic qualifications, and joined the teaching staff of St. Francis Xavier University.
