How Can I Keep My Pets
Healthy Naturally?
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
The health and longevity of our pets is dependent on a strong immune
system which is fueled by a clean, natural species appropriate
diet. In addition to achieve a clean and appropriate diet, it
is vital that their exposure to toxic and physiologically destructive substances
be kept to a minimum. Unfortunately, exposure to these substances
can be found in commercially processed foods, medications,
cleaning, and lawn products, as well as the air pets breathe resulting in
a plethora of symptoms. Among these symptoms are allergies, chronic
conditions such as ear, anal gland, skin and respiratory infections, seizures,
and even death.
The liver is a key to all health. As the main filtering organ, the liver
needs to be healthy to function properly. The liver is an essential organ of
the body that performs over 500 vital functions. Included functions range
from removing waste products and foreign substances from the bloodstream,
regulating blood sugar levels, and creating essential nutrients.
Here are some of the liver’s most principal functions:
• Albumin Production: Albumin is a protein that keeps fluids in the
bloodstream from leaking into surrounding tissue. It also carries hormones,
vitamins, and enzymes throughout the body.
• Bile Production: Bile is a fluid that is critical to the digestion and
absorption of fats in the small intestine.
• Filters Blood: All the blood leaving the stomach and intestines
passes through the liver, which removes toxins, byproducts, and other
harmful substances.
• Regulates Amino Acids: The production of proteins depends on
amino acids. The liver controls amino acid levels in the bloodstream to
remain healthy.
• Regulates Blood Clotting: Blood clotting coagulants are created by
using vitamin K, which can only be absorbed with the help of bile, a fluid
that the liver produces.
• Resists Infections: As part of the filtering process, the liver also removes
bacteria from the bloodstream.
• Stores Vitamins and Minerals: The liver stores significant amounts
of vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, as well as iron and copper.
• Processes Glucose: The liver removes excess glucose (sugar) from
the bloodstream and stores it as glycogen. As needed, it can convert glycogen
back into glucose.
When the liver is overwhelmed with toxins, mucous is formed that
restricts the flow of blood thus limiting the ability to function properly.
Quite often, the body relies on the lymphatic system to assist in the removal
of these toxins creating many of the symptoms previously mentioned.
Treating these infections does not fix the cause.
Repairing the liver function is essential and easy if you take certain
steps. Most important is to limit exposure of toxic and physiologically
destructive substances such as preventative drugs and vaccines that
provide minimal protection while damaging the liver. A number of botanical
foods cleanse and repair the liver naturally. Milk thistle, turmeric,
dandelion, ginger, licorice and cinnamon are among the favorites used
in naturopathic approaches. The addition of other superfoods such as
spirulina, chlorella and cilantro provide further removal of heavy metals
and toxins. These botanicals also contribute a plethora of micronutrients
favorable to cellular regeneration of healthy cells in the body.
Keeping the liver clean and in good repair will mitigate most health
issues to insure a longer, healthier life for your pets.
