Water as Leverage for Climate Adaptation: Wadden Sea Region Ribe Welcome to the oldest city of Scandinavia Context Ribe is the oldest city in Scandinavia, with a rich history and many valuable heritage buildings. For centuries, starting from the Viking-Age around AD 700, it was an important commercial hub for the coastal region of the Wadden Sea. It is situated in the estuarium of the Ribe Å, where the river flows via four branches through the city center of Ribe, and passes then the open landscape of wetlands, before it flows via the Kammerslusen into the salt marshes and the Wadden Sea. The city was its own municipality until 2006 and is still very proud of its identity. It has the appearance of being a local capital, with many known inhabitants and highly educated people. But also outside its own and national borders, Ribe is a known city. Yearly, around one million tourists visit Ribe and enjoy its history. However, many water issues come to the fore in the city, and climate change will only worsen these challenges. The identity of the city is under pressure, since the old buildings risk to deteriorate due to unstable soil humidity, while the frequency and impact of flooding is also getting higher. The case study of Ribe in the Water as Leverage trajectory wants to investigate solutions to maintain the valuable identity of the city, while also being futureproof considering climate change and sustainability, all this in respect with the wonderful landscape. 6 Ribe
