Water as Leverage for Climate Adaptation: Wadden Sea Region Sea level rise challenges in the Wadden Sea are only becoming acute in the long term, but problems do arise. Sea level rise in the long term Sea level rise in the Wadden Sea forms a challenge in the long term: it is generally expected to be relatively moderate in the whole North Sea Region until ca. 2050. As long as it remains moderate, sedimentation in the open Wadden Sea (littoral and sublittoral) and at its natural edges (beaches, dunes, salt marshes) can keep up with this sea level rise. However, current implementation of longterm projects should take this into account and be enough futureproof in their design. Current threats from the sea Infrastructure that lie outside the dykes or that have no natural systems such as dunes to protect them, will feel the sea level rise already now! In the Netherlands there are 12 locations with infrastructure laying outside dikes, such as West-Terschelling. Because of this peculiar situation these locations urgently need strategies to deal with the rising sea level. The challenges the sea level rise brings are often intertwined with the accessibility of the harbours, which function as logistical nodes where all the imported and exported goods pass by. 28 Call for action
Setting the scene for a Call for Action Discharge of water Lastly, the slow but continous sea level rise of the Wadden Sea complicates the discharging of fresh water at the coastal cities of the mainland and puts pressure on the polder systems. The polders are already laying lower than the sea level and need to continuously drain their fields. With the sea level rise this pumping and discharging becomes ever more difficult. Part 2 29
