Setting the Scene for a Call for Action
‘nature for nature’ has already been
applied elsewhere in the wadden
region and means that the existing
nature could be changed by another
type of nature. Terschelling sees
potential in using the mudflats for
the protection of the harbour or by
strengthening its biodiversity with
the help of seaweed or seafood
crops. An integral solution could
possibly be found by using the
artificial mudflats and using them as
protective dunes by dropping sand
on top of the breakwaters. These
kinds of solutions require ecological,
technical and juridical expertise to
be implemented.
To make the solutions realistic to
implement and to form an example
for other cities, it is also necessary
to look into the financial feasibility.
This situation of a town lying outside
the dikes (buitendijks) occurs in 11
more locations in the Netherlands. A
nature-inclusive flood protection for
Terschelling could form an example
for them and for many coastal towns
where this problem will arise in the
future. This means that the proposal
must be financially feasible so
that other municipalities can apply
similar principles. It has already been
suggested that a large artificial dike
could be too expensive, making it
more realistic to shift the logistical
path, to make the homes floodadaptive
or to even relocate the
housing towards a safer area. These
decisions have to be supported by a
cost-benefit analysis.
4. Pilot projects and partnerships
Develop four or five pilot projects
which are needed and envisage the
vision for the future.
The pilot projects need to be
integral, feasible, inclusive and
scalable. It is crucial to develop
pilot partnerships which have the
intention and capacity to develop
and implement the projects in the
following phase.
To do so, the case of Terschelling
