• Design For Geology-Inspired Sports Arena
in Saudi Arabia Unveiled by HKS Architects
HKS Architects has unveiled the plan for a
new multi-sport arena in Diriyah, which was
commissioned by the Diriyah Company. The
20,000-seat arena, which is envisioned as a
catalyst for the entertainment industry and
local culture, will be situated in the heart of
The City of Earth, a 76,000-square-metre
development in line with Saudi Vision 2030
that aims to become one of the most alluring
tourist destinations in the Middle East.
The new arena's architecture is influenced by
the natural geology and geography of the
area, paying homage to the long-standing
tradition and customs of local construction
while also attempting to encapsulate the
traditional Najdi architectural motif. The
location also incorporates cutting-edge
technology that enables its design to be
altered in a matter of hours, providing
flexibility to accommodate a rapid succession
of diverse events.
Ample retail spaces and a shopping and
dining district open to the larger Diriyah
neighbourhood are features of the adaptable
arena designed to facilitate an extended
entertainment experience. Next to the
arena, an open plaza will carry on the
event programming outside, enabling the
organisation of pop-up and live performances
in addition to an urban park for the use of
locals and guests.
