Muslims in Niger are<br />

beginning the holy month<br />

of Ramadan, but the<br />

country's residents are<br />

facing crippling inflation,<br />

which makes it harder and<br />

harder to buy necessities.<br />

The country's economy<br />

is in disarray following<br />

the change of leadership,<br />

which has been made<br />

worse by an almost eightmonth-long<br />

embargo<br />

imposed by surrounding<br />

nations.<br />

A glimmer of optimism<br />

was provided by the<br />

embargo being lifted mere<br />

weeks before Ramadan, but<br />

the situation on the ground is<br />

still severe. For many Nigeriens,<br />

the cost of basic essentials like<br />

rice, sugar, oil, and milk - which<br />

are necessary for observing<br />

Ramadan - has become<br />

unaffordable.<br />

officials and contractors,<br />

Zimbabwe's ties with the United<br />

States have reached a new low.<br />

Rattled by Electoral Turmoil<br />

President Macky Sall declared<br />

on February 16 that elections<br />

would be scheduled as soon<br />

as feasible. The news was the<br />

second significant setback for<br />

Senegalese companies in as<br />

many weeks. Elections were<br />

initially scheduled for February<br />

25.<br />

President Sall had announced<br />

on February 3 that the<br />

elections would be postponed,<br />

which caused significant<br />

worries about both the<br />

integrity of Senegalese<br />

democracy and the country's<br />

ability to do business.<br />

President Sall eventually<br />

said in July that he intended<br />
