Objective: Emergency department (ED) crowd<strong>in</strong>g is an national problem. Overcrowd<strong>in</strong>g has many<br />

other detrimental effects, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g diversion of ambulances, frustration for patients and ED personnel,<br />

decreased patient satisfaction, and, most importantly, greater risk of poor outcomes. This is partially<br />

caused by the grow<strong>in</strong>g numbers of visits by so called “walk <strong>in</strong> patients” which could easily seen by<br />

a general practitioner (GP). The aim of our study was to assess the relationship between nationality,<br />

gender age and use of health services among patients visit<strong>in</strong>g an university hospital ED.<br />

Methods: From May 1. 2007 to May 31. 2008, sociodemographic <strong>in</strong>formation were collected retrospectively<br />

from 6955 male and 4303 female patients at Inselspital, University Hospital, Berne, who had<br />

requested our emergency services for non-urgent surgical problems.<br />

Results: 26% of all visits were by foreign nationals, a percentage which is higher than the non-<strong>Swiss</strong><br />

population of Berne (22%). 57% of them were registered with a GP, compared to 83% of <strong>Swiss</strong> nationals<br />
