114 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>Spirituality</strong><br />

search to which Bible scholars have not been bl<strong>in</strong>d, with numerous<br />

attempts be<strong>in</strong>g offered. With<strong>in</strong> <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> scholarship a<br />

significant genre of such writ<strong>in</strong>g has developed, which has come to<br />

be known as <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology. 8 However, a much smaller<br />

genre, that of <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>Spirituality</strong>, has also come <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Keep<strong>in</strong>g to the latter, four such attempts are taken <strong>in</strong>to review <strong>in</strong><br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g section. Three of these publication projects are<br />

explicitly titled or sub-titled “<strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>Spirituality</strong>”; the<br />

newest of the four projects is titled “Biblical <strong>Spirituality</strong>.” S<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

the latter is a recent publication whose assumptions hold equally<br />

true for the Semitic <strong>and</strong> Hellenistic sections of the Bible, it is<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded here.<br />

Interest<strong>in</strong>gly, the problem of history, that is, how to relate a<br />

text from the past to lives <strong>in</strong> the present, lies at the heart of the<br />

respective publications. All four projects attempt to cross the<br />

bridge of history differently. We look at these publications <strong>in</strong><br />

chronological order.<br />

3. An <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>Spirituality</strong> by De la Croix?<br />

From 1961 to 1963 a triple-volume work by De la Croix, with the<br />

promis<strong>in</strong>g title <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>Spirituality</strong>, was published. 9 Closer<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigation shows, however, that this is not a work <strong>in</strong> the nascent<br />

tradition of Biblical <strong>Spirituality</strong>; rather, it st<strong>and</strong>s closer to the <strong>Old</strong><br />

<strong>Testament</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology genre. This <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation is expla<strong>in</strong>ed by the<br />

8 <strong>The</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard overview is B. Ollenburger, <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology: Flower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> Future (revised ed.; W<strong>in</strong>ona Lake: Eisenbrauns, 2004). For reservations on<br />

whether the genre of <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology is theological enough, precisely<br />

because it is not historical enough, cf. R. Albertz, Religionsgeschichte Israels <strong>in</strong><br />

alttestamentlicher Zeit (vols. 1 <strong>and</strong> 2; Gött<strong>in</strong>gen: V<strong>and</strong>enhoeck & Ruprecht,<br />

1992), 17–38.<br />

the <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong>, vol. 2; St. Louis: Herder, 1962). P. M. de la Croix, Div<strong>in</strong>e<br />
