explication <strong>and</strong> sense application are comb<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong> order to bestow<br />
on the faithful their (re)new(ed) religious identity.<br />
Though the nature of the Bible, the identity of the faith<br />
concerned, the manner of read<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> a host of other factors have<br />
changed much over the <strong>in</strong>terven<strong>in</strong>g two <strong>and</strong> a half millennia, the<br />
essence of this spirituality has rema<strong>in</strong>ed. It is <strong>in</strong> the Bible that we<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d our be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpreted. 41 This is clearly an implicit foundation<br />
<strong>in</strong>herent to the discipl<strong>in</strong>e of Biblical <strong>Spirituality</strong>.<br />
However, we should not be led to th<strong>in</strong>k that from the Second<br />
Temple period onwards only one spirituality existed. <strong>The</strong><br />
compet<strong>in</strong>g conceptions of faith we f<strong>in</strong>d reflected <strong>in</strong> the scriptural<br />
<strong>and</strong> cultural deposits from ancient Israel <strong>in</strong>dicate that devotion had<br />
never been s<strong>in</strong>gular: rival str<strong>and</strong>s of the same religion competed<br />
then, 42 have done so through the centuries, <strong>and</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly do so<br />
today. It would be misguided to th<strong>in</strong>k of any str<strong>and</strong> of faith giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
full(est) expression to the <strong>Christian</strong> tradition; equally, it would be<br />
committ<strong>in</strong>g hubris to th<strong>in</strong>k of Biblical <strong>Spirituality</strong> as somehow<br />
superior with<strong>in</strong> the broader discipl<strong>in</strong>es of <strong>Spirituality</strong> to which it<br />
relates.<br />
8.2 <strong>The</strong> relationship of history <strong>and</strong> faith<br />
<strong>Christian</strong>ity rema<strong>in</strong>s an <strong>in</strong>herently historical faith: what God has<br />
done <strong>in</strong> the history of Israel, <strong>and</strong> what Christ has done <strong>in</strong> the<br />
history of the church rema<strong>in</strong>s of central import. However, history<br />
is no simple matter: 43 reduc<strong>in</strong>g historiography to simply “tell<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
