h<strong>and</strong>, personal piety, 16 <strong>and</strong> on the other h<strong>and</strong>, broader societal<br />

What b<strong>in</strong>ds these four figures most closely together for the<br />

purposes here, though, is that all four have written on the topic of<br />

the Bible <strong>and</strong> spirituality. In these writ<strong>in</strong>gs, each has suggested a<br />

central theme for what may be called “Scriptural spirituality”—that<br />

is, a spirituality that seeks explicitly to centre on the Bible. Each of<br />

these proposals is briefly described <strong>and</strong> evaluated below.<br />

2.1 Du Toit: Liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the presence of God<br />

Du Toit takes as the essence of spirituality that one lives <strong>in</strong><br />

communion with God (“lewensgemeenskap met God”). 18 <strong>The</strong><br />

Praesentia Dei forms for him a centralis<strong>in</strong>g concept. In the <strong>Old</strong><br />

<strong>Testament</strong>, with specific reference to the Psalms, this comes to the<br />

fore even when God is experienced as hidden, or when people live<br />

as though God does not exist. 19 <strong>The</strong> face of God is a significant<br />

symbol of this presence or of a meet<strong>in</strong>g with God, <strong>in</strong> life generally<br />
