the theological encyclopaedia employ the Bible. Not <strong>in</strong>frequently,<br />
Bible scholars f<strong>in</strong>d themselves aghast at what for <strong>in</strong>stance Practical<br />
<strong>The</strong>ologians, Missiologists or Systematic <strong>The</strong>ologians do with, or<br />
perhaps, to the Bible. On their part, scholars of these discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
may well express their bewilderment at the extent of exegetical<br />
controversy related to almost every verse of the Bible, not to<br />
mention the technical expertise required to make an <strong>in</strong>formed<br />
judgement call on, for example, the composition of the “Big Five”<br />
of the <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Testament</strong>, namely the Moses-books, 7 or on the<br />
authenticity of the Jesus-words with<strong>in</strong> the “Big Five” of the New<br />
<strong>Testament</strong>, namely the four Gospels <strong>and</strong> the Paul<strong>in</strong>e corpus.<br />
With<strong>in</strong> the biblical sciences themselves, the diversity of<br />
deliberate read<strong>in</strong>g strategies—what Barton terms “‘advocacy’<br />
read<strong>in</strong>gs” 8 —<strong>in</strong> order to <strong>in</strong>terpret the Bible for or with the<br />
politically suppressed <strong>and</strong> the marg<strong>in</strong>alised <strong>in</strong> societies, 9 the underrecognised<br />
gender, 10 the abused environment, 11 et cetera, also<br />
<strong>in</strong>dicate the plurality of ways <strong>in</strong> which the Bible speaks, or is<br />
brought to speak, to modern socio-ethical concerns. What is more,<br />
on many of these approaches so much has already been written,<br />
that it requires more than the usual dedication just to become at<br />
home with<strong>in</strong> an approach as it relates to one section of Scripture<br />
related to a s<strong>in</strong>gle modern issue. Truly comparative read<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> this<br />
