CAREER HiGHLiGHTS<br />

Missed the entire 2009 and 2010 seasons after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery…was acquired by<br />

the A’s from Atlanta prior to the 2008 season in the Mark Kotsay trade and posted a 0.59 ERA in 42 appearances<br />

with <strong>Oakland</strong>…since the earned run became an official stat, his ERA was the lowest in Major<br />

League history among pitchers with 25 or more innings pitched…was Atlanta’s first round selection in<br />

the 2005 draft and spent parts of each of his three professional seasons in the majors with the Braves,<br />

compiling a 6.86 ERA in 25 appearances…made his Major League debut Aug. 20, 2005, less than three<br />

months after being drafted…also pitched in the NLDS that year against Houston…made 97 career minor<br />

league appearances, including four starts, and was 9-9 with 26 saves, a 2.86 ERA and a .202 opponents<br />

batting average…had 170 strikeouts in 116.1 innings, an average of 13.16 per nine innings.<br />

2010 HiGHLiGHTS<br />

Missed the entire season for the second consecutive year as he continued his rehab from “Tommy John”<br />

surgery on his right elbow April 21, 2009…was one of three <strong>Oakland</strong> pitchers to miss the entire 2010<br />

season due to “Tommy John” surgery along with Josh Outman and John Meloan.<br />

CAREER<br />

2009— Had “Tommy John” surgery on his right elbow and missed the entire season…made two Spring<br />

Training appearances Feb. 26 and March 4 before he was sidelined with right elbow inflammation…<br />

returned to make one final spring outing March 27 but began the season on the 60-day disabled list…<br />

Dr. James Andrews performed reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow<br />

April 21…was one of three A’s pitchers to have “Tommy John” surgery in 2009, along with Dan Giese<br />

(June 9) and Josh Outman (June 30).<br />

2008—The rookie reliever was acquired from Atlanta in the Mark Kotsay trade and posted a 0.59 ERA<br />

in 42 relief appearances with the A’s…since the earned run became an official stat (1912 in NL, 1913 in<br />

AL), his ERA was the lowest in Major League history among pitchers with 25 or more innings pitched…<br />

did not allow a home run in 45.2 innings pitched, which set an <strong>Oakland</strong> record for most innings pitched<br />

in a season without a home run…topped the previous mark of 38.2 innings by Vida Blue in 1970…his<br />

innings without a home run were second most among American League relievers in 2008 (Jim Johnson,<br />

BAL 68.2 ip)…now has a 61-game, 60.0-inning, 241-batter homerless streak…allowed his last home<br />

run April 7, 2006 at San Francisco (Moises Alou)…allowed a .150 opponents batting average, which<br />

ranked second lowest among AL relievers (Grant Balfour, TB .143)…it was also second lowest in <strong>Oakland</strong><br />

history to Jim Roland’s .134 in 1970…allowed just three extra base hits, all doubles, and his .170<br />

opponents slugging percentage was the lowest by a ML reliever since 1953…issued 15 walks for a<br />

.225 on-base percentage, which was second lowest among AL relievers in 2008 and third lowest among<br />

relievers in <strong>Oakland</strong> history…struck out 49 batters for a strikeout to walk ratio of 3.27, which was 10 th<br />

best among AL relievers…now has 69 strikeouts in 65.1 career innings (9.51 per nine innings)…first<br />

batters faced were 6 for 40 (.150) with a walk, a sacrifice fly (.167 on-base percentage) and no extra base<br />

hits (.150 slugging percentage)…the on-base percentage was the lowest among ML relievers, the slugging<br />

percentage was third lowest in the AL and the batting average was fifth lowest…now has a .158 (9<br />

for 57) average against first batters in his career…allowed 7 of 22 (31.8%) inherited runners to score…<br />

compiled a 6-1 record and tied for sixth among AL relievers in wins…was on the disabled list from May<br />

26 to Aug. 1 with a right elbow inflammation…had a 1.23 ERA and .198 opponents batting average in<br />

18 outings when he went on the DL and then did not allow an earned run while holding the opposition<br />
