Pitching Coach<br />

Scott Emerson enters his ninth season as a pitching coach in the A’s organization,<br />

his first with Sacramento after serving in the same capacity with Midland for<br />

four seasons. He spent the previous four seasons with the organization’s Single-A<br />

affiliates, spending 2005-06 with Stockton and the 2003-04 seasons with Modesto.<br />

Emerson previously served in the same role for three seasons in the Pittsburgh<br />

Pirates farm system, spending two seasons with the Rookie League club at Bradenton (2000-01) before<br />

moving to Single-A Williamsport in the New York-Penn League (2002).<br />

Emerson was selected by Baltimore in the 40th round of the 1991 June draft. He played parts of four<br />

seasons in the Orioles farm system before being traded to Boston during the 1995 campaign. He was a<br />

10-game winner with Single-A Albany in 1993 and retired as a player following the 1998 season.<br />

Emerson and his wife, Jill, make their offseason home in Rockingham, N.C.<br />

Hitting Coach<br />

Todd Steverson returns to Sacramento after spending two seasons as the A’s first<br />

base coach. Prior to joining the Major League coaching staff, Steverson spent the<br />

previous four seasons managing in the A’s farm system, compiling a 297-264 (.529)<br />

record.<br />

Steverson joined the A’s organization in 2004 as hitting coach for their shortseason<br />

Single-A affiliate at Vancouver. He was named manager at Single-A Stockton in 2005 and guided<br />

the Ports to a 78-62 record and playoff appearance. Steverson returned to Stockton in 2006, then spent<br />

one year at Double-A Midland in 2007 before moving to Triple-A Sacramento. His River Cats compiled<br />

an 83-61 record and won their second consecutive Triple-A and Pacific Coast League championships in<br />

2008. Steverson began his coaching career in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system and spent five seasons<br />

with Potomac (1999; 2001-02), Peoria (2000) and Palm Beach (2003), all Single-A affiliates.<br />

Steverson played professionally for seven seasons, including two seasons in the Major Leagues with<br />

Detroit (1995) and San Diego (1996). He compiled a .256 batting average, two home runs and six RBI<br />

in 31 games, including 30 with the Tigers and one with the Padres. Steverson was drafted by St. Louis<br />

in the sixth round out of Culver City (CA) High School in 1989, but did not sign and attended Arizona<br />

State University. Three years later, he was a first-round pick (25th overall) of Toronto and spent three<br />

seasons in the Blue Jays farm system before he was selected by Detroit in the Rule 5 draft. He concluded<br />

his playing career at Triple-A Memphis in 1998.<br />

Steverson makes his offseason home in Phoenix, Ariz., with his wife Theresa, daughter Joya and son<br />

Jaryn.<br />
