KEY MESSAGES<br />

• <strong>Diabetes</strong> increases the prevalence of coronary artery<br />

disease (CAD) approximately 2- to 3-fold compared to<br />

individuals without diabetes. People with diabetes develop<br />

CAD 10 to 12 years earlier than individuals without<br />

diabetes.When a person with diabetes has an acute<br />

coronary event, the short- and long-term outcomes<br />

are considerably worse than for the person without<br />

diabetes.<br />

• People with diabetes should be considered to have a high<br />

10-year risk of CAD events if ≥45 years and male, or<br />

≥50 years and female. For the younger person (male<br />

15 years.<br />
