Department <strong>of</strong> Surgery<br />
Fellow <strong>of</strong> the American <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Surgeons in<br />
San Francisco in October 2011.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Farouk Safi’s clinical interests in colorectal<br />
<strong>and</strong> hepatobiliary surgery led to presentations<br />
at national <strong>and</strong> overseas meetings. His contributions<br />
have included the management <strong>of</strong> severe<br />
liver injuries, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)<br />
<strong>and</strong> pancreatic carcinoma with lectures in Al Ain,<br />
Abu Dhabi, Dubai <strong>and</strong> Umm Al Quwain <strong>and</strong> in<br />
Europe (Copenhagen <strong>and</strong> Milan). Currently, Pr<strong>of</strong><br />
Safi’s clinical practice has generated data relating<br />
to surgical interventions for hepatic <strong>and</strong> pancreatic<br />
malignancy <strong>and</strong> colorectal resections. Liver<br />
failure after hepatectomy, atypical appearance<br />
<strong>of</strong> HCC, rare liver tumors are new areas in which<br />
he has developed an interest. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Safi made<br />
presentations in 2011 in Jeddah (KSA), Kuwait,<br />
Oman <strong>and</strong> three presentations during the Annual<br />
Meeting <strong>of</strong> the Asian Society for Surgery in the<br />
Philippines. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Safi also organized a very<br />
successful (1st) Liver Surgery Workshop held at<br />
FMHS with international speakers <strong>and</strong> participants.<br />

In 2011 Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fikri Abu-Zidan continued his<br />
focused research activities in the areas <strong>of</strong> trauma<br />
management, ‘point-<strong>of</strong>-care’ critical care ultrasound<br />
<strong>and</strong> acute care surgery. He is effectively<br />
leading the Trauma <strong>Research</strong> Group <strong>of</strong> the FMHS<br />
with collaborative work involving the Departments<br />
<strong>of</strong> Community <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>and</strong> Radiology<br />
(FMHS), <strong>and</strong> Departments <strong>of</strong> Surgery, Critical<br />
Care, Emergency <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>and</strong> Radiology at both<br />
Tawam <strong>and</strong> Al Ain Hospitals. In 2011, he published<br />
18 articles/reviews in international refereed<br />
Journals. At present he is studying seatbelt injuries,<br />
pedestrian injuries, animal related injuries,<br />
<strong>and</strong> ‘point-<strong>of</strong>-care’ emergency abdominal ultrasound.<br />
He has been able to raise external funds to<br />
appoint a <strong>Research</strong> Fellow (Dr Alaa Abbas) <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Senior <strong>Research</strong> Fellow (Dr Ashraf Hefny).<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Abu-Zidan was the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Organizing<br />
Committee <strong>of</strong> the 7th Middle East Trauma<br />
Meeting in the Accident <strong>and</strong> Emergency Conference<br />
in 2011 in Abu Dhabi (October), <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Co-Chair <strong>of</strong> the Organizing Committee <strong>of</strong> the 2nd<br />
International Conference: Trauma Management,<br />
Critical Care <strong>and</strong> Prevention which was held in<br />
February 2011, in Al Ain, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Branicki being the<br />
Chair <strong>of</strong> the Scientific Committee (Trauma).<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Abu-Zidan continued scholarship activities<br />
including being a Guest Editor for two symposia<br />
on emergency sonography for the Journal<br />
<strong>of</strong> Emergencies, Trauma <strong>and</strong> Shock.<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fayez Hammad<br />
Assoc Pr<strong>of</strong>. Fayez Hammad has particular clinical<br />
interests in minimally invasive surgery for renal<br />
stone disease <strong>and</strong> oncology. He is the Founding<br />
Program Director for the recently established<br />
residency training program in Urology which is<br />
currently under the auspices <strong>of</strong> HAAD (<strong>Health</strong><br />
Authority <strong>of</strong> Abu Dhabi).<br />
Assoc Pr<strong>of</strong>. Fayez Hammad completed a study on<br />
the “propagation characteristics <strong>of</strong> the electrical<br />
impulse in the normal <strong>and</strong> permanently <strong>and</strong> reversibly<br />
obstructed ureter as determined at high<br />
electrophysiological resolution” in collaboration<br />
with Pr<strong>of</strong>. Wim Lammers from the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Physiology, FMHS. This work has resulted in two<br />
publications in both the Journal <strong>of</strong> Urology <strong>and</strong><br />
the British Journal <strong>of</strong> Urology-International. The<br />
research was funded by an Individual <strong>Research</strong><br />
Grant from the United Arab Emirates University<br />
(2008).<br />
From the experimental work performed at the<br />
<strong>Research</strong> Laboratory, Department <strong>of</strong> Surgery<br />
(FMHS), Dr Hammad also completed a study <strong>of</strong><br />
“The effect <strong>of</strong> NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory<br />
drugs) on the obstructed kidney” funded<br />
by a Seed Grant from FMHS, United Arab Emirates<br />
University. The study commenced in late 2008
