<strong>and</strong> by the end <strong>of</strong> 2009 work in two groups <strong>of</strong><br />

animals had been completed (control group<br />

(left ureteric obstruction for two days) <strong>and</strong><br />

an NSAIDs group (left ureteric obstruction for<br />

two days having received NSAIDs), data were<br />

published in Urological <strong>Research</strong>. The work on<br />

“the effect <strong>of</strong> curcumin on the renal dysfunction<br />

following reversible unilateral ureteric obstruction<br />

in the rat” has also been completed. The<br />

data were published in the journal <strong>of</strong> European<br />

Surgical <strong>Research</strong>. In addition, the study <strong>of</strong> “the<br />

effect <strong>of</strong> curcumin on the renal dysfunction following<br />

renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in the<br />

rat” was completed <strong>and</strong> currently, the manuscript<br />

is under preparation. All these experimental<br />

studies were performed in collaboration<br />

with Mr. Loay Lubbad, research assistant.<br />

In collaboration with Dr Hasan Elbiss, Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Obstetrics <strong>and</strong> Gynaecology, Dr Hammad<br />

is participating in a study related to the<br />

incidence <strong>of</strong> urinary incontinence <strong>and</strong> prolapse<br />

in UAE women. In addition, they completed<br />

a study on whether teaching patients clean<br />

intermittent self catheterization prior to antiincontinence<br />

or prolapse surgery is necessary<br />

in women with voiding difficulty. The data were<br />

accepted for publication in International Urology<br />

<strong>and</strong> Nephrology. The study was performed<br />

in collaboration with the Department <strong>of</strong> Obstetrics<br />

<strong>and</strong> Gynaecology, Worcestershire Royal<br />

Hospital NHS Trust, Worcester, UK. They also<br />

reported a rare case <strong>of</strong> “placenta percreta invading<br />

urinary bladder <strong>and</strong> parametrium” which<br />

was accepted for publication in the Journal <strong>of</strong><br />

Obstetrics <strong>and</strong> Gynaecology.<br />

In collaboration with Pr<strong>of</strong> Abu Zidan, Dr Hammad<br />

has published data regarding the incidence<br />

<strong>of</strong> genitourinary injuries in United Arab<br />

Emirates (Journal <strong>of</strong> Emergency Trauma <strong>and</strong><br />

Shock). With Pr<strong>of</strong> Abu Zidan <strong>and</strong> Dr Shaban<br />

from the Medical Education team, Dr Hammad<br />

also has a manuscript, accepted for publication<br />

in Medical Principles <strong>and</strong> Practice, entitled<br />

“Multiple authorship <strong>and</strong> article type in urology<br />

journals across the Atlantic: trends over the past<br />

six decades”.<br />

In collaboration with the Urology team from<br />

Dubai Hospital, Dr Hammad has reported on<br />

a rare case <strong>of</strong> “Congenital pelvic arteriovenous<br />

malformation presenting with urinary retention”.<br />

This was also accepted for publication in<br />

Medical Principles <strong>and</strong> Practice.<br />

Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Fawaz Torab is the Chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Al Ain Medical District (AAMD) Human<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Ethics Committee. This Committee<br />

includes members from Tawam <strong>and</strong> Al Ain Hospitals<br />

in addition to Primary <strong>Health</strong> Care, Preventive<br />

<strong>Medicine</strong>, Zayed Military Hospital <strong>and</strong><br />

Oasis Hospital. All research projects performed<br />

by human investigators or in a <strong>Health</strong> institution<br />

in AAMD are reviewed for approval by this<br />

Committee. A submission seeking renewal <strong>of</strong><br />

acceptance with the Federal Wide Assurance<br />

authorities in USA was successful. This will facilitate<br />

any research project carried out in collaboration<br />

with researchers in the USA.<br />

Promoted to Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr Torab is<br />

the ‘Founder’ <strong>and</strong> ‘President’ <strong>of</strong> the Obesity <strong>and</strong><br />

Metabolic Surgery Interest Group in the UAE<br />

(OMSIG). This group was accredited in 2009<br />

through the International Federation <strong>of</strong> Surgery<br />

for Obesity (IFSO) <strong>and</strong> the UAE has now become<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> this prestigious federation. He has<br />

been a member <strong>of</strong> the Technical <strong>and</strong> Scientific<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> the Roadways, Transportation<br />

<strong>and</strong> Traffic Safety <strong>Research</strong> Centre, UAE Univer-<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Surgery<br />
