Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr Stella Major is an Honorary<br />
Senior Lecturer at Imperial <strong>College</strong> London.<br />
She has contributed to three chapters in a new<br />
undergraduate textbook published by Wiley;<br />
General Practice at a Glance, together with her<br />
colleagues from Imperial <strong>College</strong>, Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Primary Care <strong>and</strong> Social <strong>Medicine</strong>. She is an<br />
independent external assessor for an application<br />
for registration for a PhD student in the<br />
school <strong>of</strong> public health <strong>and</strong> social medicine<br />
at Imperial <strong>College</strong>, London titled: Exploring<br />
the Use <strong>of</strong> Smartphone <strong>Health</strong> Apps as a Self-<br />
Management Tool for Chronic Conditions. Her<br />
collaboration with colleagues at the American<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Beirut continues by which she has<br />
been invited to attend as an external examiner<br />
for the Oral Examination <strong>of</strong> the Arab Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Family <strong>Medicine</strong> Specialty in the New Year. In<br />
2011, Dr Stella Major was awarded Fellowship<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Royal <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> General Practitioners<br />
for her contribution to British <strong>and</strong> International<br />
General Practice in the fields <strong>of</strong> Teaching, <strong>Research</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> Academic Leadership. As an active<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the International MRCGP Int. Group,<br />
she has been invited to be an external examiner<br />
for the Clinical Skills Assessment component<br />
<strong>of</strong> the MRCGP International exams in Dubai in<br />
2011.<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Engela A M Prinsloo is<br />
exploring the use <strong>of</strong> reflective portfolios, tutor<br />
support <strong>and</strong> feedback to students in a family<br />
medicine clerkship <strong>and</strong> an ongoing action<br />
research project is being conducted. Dr Prinsloo<br />
other research area is the implementation <strong>and</strong><br />
use <strong>of</strong> obesity guidelines in primary health care<br />
settings for adult <strong>and</strong> pediatric population. She<br />
is also interested in developing <strong>and</strong> researching<br />
a sustainable conceptual model for experiential<br />
teaching sites for Family <strong>Medicine</strong> through<br />
collaboration between different partners<br />
including universities, communities <strong>and</strong> service<br />
providers.<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stella Major is the director<br />
<strong>of</strong> the newly created Clinical Skills Course in the<br />
Organs Systems Yrs (3 <strong>and</strong> 4) <strong>and</strong> is working<br />
hard on developing an integrated, sustainable<br />
<strong>and</strong> student- centered clinical skills program at<br />
the FMHS.<br />
In an attempt to make the course as robust<br />
as possible, <strong>and</strong> yet culturally adjusted; she is<br />
working with colleagues from the FMHS on<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing the local context <strong>and</strong> how it<br />
impacts the teaching <strong>of</strong> skills such as the communication<br />
<strong>of</strong> bad news.<br />
She plans to conduct an electronic Delphi<br />
process with subject experts (local <strong>and</strong> international)<br />
to formalize the content <strong>of</strong> the clinical<br />
skills curriculum which has been drawn up by all<br />
5 clinical departments at the FMHS, to prepare<br />
the medical students for their junior clerkships<br />
where they will be rotating in the hospitals <strong>and</strong><br />
outpatient clinic settings.<br />
With the advent <strong>of</strong> internationalization <strong>of</strong> education,<br />
<strong>and</strong> she being an international educator<br />
herself, she is joined by medical educator<br />
colleagues from the UK <strong>and</strong> Australia, to explore<br />
attributes <strong>of</strong> an international medical educators<br />
who choose to work away from their home<br />
country, <strong>and</strong> hopes that the findings <strong>of</strong> this<br />
qualitative international study will pave way<br />
for improved underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> how being an<br />
international medical educators can benefit<br />
oneself as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional, the students, as well<br />
as the employing academic institutions all over<br />
the world.<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor M Jawad Hashim is<br />
engaged in research on health education<br />
<strong>and</strong> health informatics. <strong>Health</strong> education is a<br />
relatively nascent field <strong>of</strong> enquiry in this region<br />
<strong>and</strong> our recent work with Emirati patients has<br />
shed light on their unique preferences for<br />
the format <strong>and</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> health messages.<br />
