sity since 2005, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the National Committee<br />
on <strong>Research</strong> Ethics, Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, since<br />
2008. Assoc Pr<strong>of</strong> Torab was also nominated for<br />
membership <strong>of</strong> the National <strong>Research</strong> Committee<br />
<strong>of</strong> the UAE.<br />
Assoc Pr<strong>of</strong> Fawaz Torab’s clinical interests are in<br />
acute care surgery, particularly pancreatitis <strong>and</strong><br />
abdominal sepsis. There is a principal interest in<br />
laparoscopic procedures (bariatric surgery) for<br />
morbidly obese patients, whose co-morbidities<br />
affecting life style <strong>and</strong> life span can be ameliorated<br />
by surgical intervention. A prospectively<br />
collected large database relating to surgical<br />
procedures performed is accruing <strong>and</strong> Assoc<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong> Torab has pioneered, in the UAE, the use <strong>of</strong><br />
single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for<br />
various procedures.<br />
He has also continued oversight <strong>of</strong> basic <strong>and</strong><br />
advanced laparoscopic surgical workshops <strong>and</strong><br />
courses in the UAE <strong>and</strong> elsewhere for Residents<br />
in training <strong>and</strong> more experienced surgeons.<br />
<strong>Research</strong> interests in collaboration with departmental,<br />
basic sciences <strong>and</strong> hospital colleagues<br />
at Al Ain <strong>and</strong> Tawam Hospital include clinical<br />
outcomes <strong>of</strong> primary <strong>and</strong> revisional bariatric<br />
surgery <strong>and</strong> single port procedures, experimental<br />
models <strong>of</strong> peritoneal sepsis, experimental<br />
studies <strong>of</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> breast cancer, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
investigation <strong>of</strong> pro-inflammatory mediators in<br />
patients undergoing open or laparoscopic surgery<br />
for perforated peptic ulcer. In 2011 he has<br />
made significant contributions with presentations<br />
nationally in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi <strong>and</strong> Dubai<br />
<strong>and</strong> in Germany.<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ali Jawas<br />
Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ali Jawas successfully<br />
completed Residency training in General <strong>and</strong><br />
Vascular Surgery at the University <strong>of</strong> Toronto in<br />
2004 <strong>and</strong> was appointed Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in<br />
December 2004. Following his training in Vascular<br />
Surgery he has also completed a Fellowship<br />
in Toronto <strong>and</strong> rejoined us in Al Ain in October<br />
2005. He is actively involved in the provision <strong>of</strong><br />
vascular services in Tawam Hospital. Previously<br />
the Program Director for our Integrated General<br />
Surgery Residency Training Program he was appointed<br />
by the Arab Board for Medical Specialization,<br />
Damascus, Syria as their representative<br />
for General Surgery training in the United Arab<br />
Emirates. He has been a member <strong>of</strong> the Evalua-<br />
tion Committee for surgical training programs<br />
in different emirates. Main research interests<br />
are related to the study <strong>of</strong> the management <strong>of</strong><br />
peripheral arterial disease in Gulf countries. An<br />
Executive Board member in the Vascular Society<br />
he contributed to writing the “Guidelines for the<br />
Management <strong>of</strong> Peripheral Arterial Disease in<br />
the GCC countries”. Dr Jawas was much involved<br />
as Coordinator <strong>and</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong> the Scientific<br />
Committee for the 5th Conference <strong>of</strong> the Gulf<br />
Vascular Society <strong>and</strong> the 5th Scientific Meeting<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Saudi Society for Vascular Surgery, which<br />
was held in Dubai in March 2011 <strong>and</strong> deemed to<br />
be very successful.<br />

Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tahra Al Mahmoud completed<br />
Residency training in Ophthalmology<br />
at McGill University, Montreal <strong>and</strong> a Fellowship<br />
period in Ottawa concerned with disease <strong>of</strong> the<br />
anterior chamber <strong>of</strong> the eye. Appointed Assistant<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Dr. Tahra is on subatical leave to<br />
complete a fellowship in Uveitis at McGill University.<br />
Dr. Al Mahmoud’s main research activities<br />
are in the area <strong>of</strong> Ophthalmology. Together<br />
with colleagues in Canada, she is involved in<br />
collaborative clinical research comparing clinical<br />
outcomes <strong>of</strong> various refractive procedures
