produced <strong>in</strong> the wake of the global focus on the <strong>Yugoslav</strong> wars <strong>in</strong> the<br />

1990s—Misha Glenny’s The <strong>Balkan</strong>s, 1804–1999: <strong>Nationalism</strong>, War <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Great Powers—underscores that the underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Yugoslav</strong>ia requires a<br />

broad perspective as much as European, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational histories of the<br />

modern era cannot afford to overlook <strong>Yugoslav</strong>ia. 25 It must be acknowledged<br />

that Glenny is one of the few western <strong>Balkan</strong> analysts who realized two<br />

critically important th<strong>in</strong>gs about the region under consideration. The first is<br />

that one of the major causes of the <strong>Balkan</strong> peoples’ “eternal” troubles is<br />

their <strong>in</strong>ability to cooperate with each other <strong>and</strong> atta<strong>in</strong> some degree of unity<br />

for the sake of common good <strong>and</strong> liberty. For that matter, the lesson of<br />

<strong>Yugoslav</strong>ia should be both about a remarkable failure <strong>and</strong> promise of success<br />

(i.e., potential through cooperation). The second is that the <strong>Balkan</strong> peoples<br />

shed their blood <strong>in</strong> order to master their own dest<strong>in</strong>y only to realize after<br />

every cycle of massacres <strong>and</strong> wars that outsiders—the great powers—would<br />

decide their fate. Consequently this book cannot rema<strong>in</strong> a case study even<br />

if it were designed as such because it exam<strong>in</strong>es a country of an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

cultural heterogeneity that happened to be located <strong>in</strong> a region which,<br />

analogous, for example, to the Middle East, is the world <strong>in</strong> a microcosm. No<br />

less important, this is the region where Rome <strong>and</strong> Byzantium <strong>and</strong> later<br />

Ottoman Turkey <strong>and</strong> Habsburg Austria challenged each other <strong>and</strong> vied for<br />

souls <strong>and</strong> loyalties of the local peoples; where the notorious “Eastern Question”<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ated; where the 1914 Sarajevo assass<strong>in</strong>ation led toward World<br />

War I; where the first large heresy with<strong>in</strong> the communist block was born;<br />

where the first large-scale post–Cold War conflict took place; <strong>and</strong> so forth.<br />

Consequently, a book like this one <strong>in</strong>dispensably had to exceed boundaries<br />

of a country <strong>and</strong> even regional studies <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> addition to contribut<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the <strong>Yugoslav</strong> scholarship, draw several broader generalizations concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

nationalism, religion, secularization, communism, <strong>and</strong> the world after <strong>Yugoslav</strong>ia’s<br />

collapse.<br />
