MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROBATION
Overview
Any YES student who has failed two or more classes will be placed on Academic Probation. Academic Probation will last
for a minimum of six weeks, or one grading cycle. Parents and students are required to attend academic probation
meetings.
Supporting Students on Academic Probation
At the end of each six-week grading period, mandatory Academic Probation meetings will be held. Failure to attend
these meetings without prior communication to an administrator or grade level chair will result in disciplinary action. At
these meetings, students, parents, and teachers will meet to create action plans. Students will required to meet the
details of that action plan and consequences may be issued if students are not compliant.
Returning to Good Academic Standing
If, according to the next report card, the student is failing fewer than two classes, he or she will be removed from
Academic Probation and will become a student in good standing.
Continuing On Academic Probation
Any student on Academic Probation who is failing classes at the end of the next grading cycle will be reviewed by his/her
grade-level teachers. The grade level teachers will then advise the school administrator to make the following
determination:
a. The student is not passing all classes but is making significant progress. This student will remain on
Academic Probation for another grading cycle and his/her progress will be reviewed for the next six weeks.
A grade-level teacher will meet with each student who continues to earn failing marks and, if necessary, his/her parent
or guardian to discuss that student’s academic status. The school administrator may also choose to attend these
meetings. At this time, parents will be presented with additional feedback and suggestions from the child’s teachers.
WALL STREET (Middle School Only)
Wall Street is the after-school program used to ensure our students complete their daily homework assignments. It is
named after Wall Street in New York City, where the motto of the investment bankers who work there is “you don’t go
home until the work is done.” Students may be required to stay after school on for Wall Street if they come to class
unprepared or with work that is not up to the YES Prep standard of quality. All assignments (homework and class work)
must be neat, complete, accurate and on-time. Students are required to stay after school for 1 hour for Wall Street;
parents will be notified the same day and are responsible for transportation home after Wall Street. Students who
receive Wall Street and Detention on the same day will be required to stay for 1 ½ hours after school.
Wall Street will not be rescheduled except in the case of a family emergency, and the request must be made to a school
administrator by the parent. A family emergency is not a doctor’s appointment, an uncompromising work schedule, or
the child feeling slightly ill. Only extreme cases such as immediate medical situations will be deemed family emergencies
and these must have administrator approval. Wall Street will also be assigned to students who do not return paperwork
on time, as well as students who arrive to school after 8:00am.
Students who do not stay for Wall Street will be immediately placed on RISE the following day.
