The dance programme monographs Nafarroa(1970), Gipuzkoa (1972), Lapurdi (1974) and Zuberoa(1978) transformed the face of Basque dance fromtop to boom. Encouraged by the movaon of Argia, several other groups followed its lead. Of these, one should menon: the collecon and rearrangementof folklore in Nafarroa undertaken by Ortzadarin Iruñea-Pamplona; the contribuons of the AndraMari dance group in Galdakao to the dances of Bizkaiaand Nafarroa; and the work done by the Begiraleakgroup to re-establish the carnivals of Lapurdi, which aer thirty years is on the point of being registeredon the UNESCO World Non-Material CulturalHeritage list. The premiere of the performance Zortziko in 1988marked a milestone in the history of Basque dance.During the organisaon of the renowned interna-onal folklore fesval in Confolens, France, its director,Henri Coursaget, thought that the BasqueCountry should be the main guest country at thefesval that year. He sent his proposal to the associaonof dancers in Iparralde (the Northern BasqueCountry) and they put Juan Antonio Urbeltz incharge of the main show. This is how Zortziko cameabout, the huge performance of Basque dance directedby Argia involving two hundred dancers andmusicians.Although dancers from several dance groups tookpart in the Zortziko performance, the work methodsof Argia were evident in the show’s form of dancing, the sparkling costumes and the candid nature of themusic, as well as in its ability to present tradionand innovaon as two branches of the same tree.Aer premiering in Confolens, the show toured forthree years in theatres and pilota (Basque handball)courts; and aer 1991, the touring connued withits follow-up, Alakiketan. In 1994, sixty-five yearsaer the Basque dance show Saski Naski had beenperformed at the Champs-Élysées theatre in Paris,43
