Han pasado más de cuarenta años desde que lospioneros de la danza contemporánea vasca dieronsus primeros pasos. Al final de la década de los 60,José y Concha Lainez abrieron nuevos caminos conlenguajes de danza hasta entonces desconocidos enel País Vasco. Habían bailado en el Het Naonal Balletde los Países Bajos y crearon el grupo de danzacontemporánea Anexa en San Sebasán. Medianteel grupo Anexa labraron el terreno de la danza contemporáneay pusieron en marcha a muchos bailarinesy profesores. Iñaki Landa, Julio Duran, MentxuMedel, Mentxu Alkorta, Javier Legorburu, Katxua oAna Moreno entre otros se implicaron en la labor.En Pamplona, los Lainez crearon el grupo Yauskari.En Lapurdi Mizel Theret fundó la compañía Ekarle ycomenzó un largo recorrido en la danza contemporáneaque ha perdurado hasta hoy.Muchos de los que vinieron después han estudiadofuera y cuando han entrado querido desarrollar sucarrera profesional, se han visto obligados a seguirviajando de un lado a otro. Algunos han establecidosu base de operaciones en el País Vasco a pesardel escaso apoyo que la creación y la difusión en elcampo de la danza enen por parte de instuciones,organizadores, medios de comunicación y espectadores.Tienen la sede en casa, pero sin asiento y, portanto, han connuado yendo al extranjero y volviendoa casa, aprendiendo, viendo, comparendo, enseñandoy bailando. Siguen ganándose el pan comopueden para poder seguir impulsando la danza en elPaís Vasco. Otros disponen de los medio, las relaciones,los compañeros de trabajo y los proyectos en elextranjero, pero el corazón les trae a casa y siempretraen las alforjas llenas.El vitoriano Damián Muñoz lleva la úlma décadaafincado en Barcelona, donde ha producido junto aVirginia García la mayoría de sus trabajos. Desde queen 1995 creó su compañía, Muñoz ha recorrido unafecunda trayectoria arsca bailando con sensibilidadlas relaciones humanas. In the late 1960s, Jose andConcha Lainez opened up new avenues of explora-on in what were unl that me unusual forms ofdance in the Basque Country. They had been dancersat the Het Naonal Ballet in the Netherlands, andthey founded the Anexa contemporary dance groupin Donosa-San Sebasán. Through the Anexa group,they culvated the contemporary dance terrain,and encouraged several dancers and teachers on aprofessional career path. Iñaki Landa, Julio Duran,Mentxu Medel, Mentxu Alkorta, Javier Legorburu,Katxua and Ana Moreno, amongst others, becamedancers because of such determinaon. Moving toIruñea-Pamplona, the Lainez siblings established theYauskari group. In Iparralde, meanwhile, Mizel Théretfounded the Ekarle company and to this day, hasconnued in a long creave career in the field of contemporarydance.Most of the people that followed have had to goabroad to study, and when they begin working professionally,they usually move around a lot. Some ofthem decide to base their operaons in the BasqueCountry. They choose this path even knowing theyenjoy lile support from organisaons, promoters,the media and the public for their creaon and transmissionin the field of dance. They have locales butusually without any public seang so they connueto travel and return home intermiently; they keepon studying, observing, sharing, teaching and, oen,presenng and selling performances; in other words,in order to remain in the Basque Country they dowhatever is needed to earn a crust. Others have theircareers, contacts, colleagues and projects abroad, buttheir hearts bring them home and they try to forge acareer against what their heads tell them.Damian Muñoz has been based in Barcelona for thelast ten years and most of his work is there, togetherwith Virginia Garcia.
