1937, gogoarenbidezidorretak (2002), Otehitzari Biraka (2005) yTradional Dances as a Point of DepartureTaking folklore dances as a point of departure, inrecent years groups that create shows with an eyeto performing them on stage have increased greatly.During the first half of the tweneth century, the pathopened up by Saski Naski, Eresoinka and Elai-Alai ledto producve results for the models that followed:Olaeta, Oldarra, Etorki and the Schola Cantorum, for example. The characteriscs of this model weresuites based on tradional dances, stylised forms ofdance which sought to approximate the aesthecs ofballet and the narrave use of dance. Together withchanges through the century, following the customof having large groups up to that me (made up offorty or fiy members), smaller groups of around fiveto fieen members began to emerge.Perhaps the first group to adopt this new smallerform debuted during a performance by the musicalgroup Gozategi in 1996, on the iniave of JesusMari Garate. Edu Muruamendiaraz, who stood out asa champion aurreskua and dantza solte (free dance)dancer at the me, and who also unl then had beena member of the Koruko Ama Birjinaren Eskola orSchola Cantorum, took part in this performance. Muruamendiarazfounded the Aukeran dance companyin 1997 and this company grew successfully with itsperformances on the theatre circuit. Taking the stepsof the dantzari-dantza and dantza-solte championshipsof Gipuzkoa, Zuberoa and Bizkaia as its founda-on, works by Aukeran featured choreographies adjustedto new forms of music, costume and lighng. Some of their works include Sutargi (2001), Izenaduen guza omen da (2003), Bideak (2006) and Burniak(2011).One four-piece group that was taking part in aurreskuaand dantza solte championships prepared anothersmaller kind of performance in 1999. TheLaxok group offered several performances of theshow Upeletan Erronka, and in 2001, one member ofthe group, Jon Maya, formed his own company: Ku-49
