A very important book on Central Asia and its mountain ranges!
- This is the hardly known abridged edition of the Schlagintweits
famous work “Reisen in Indien und Hochasien”, often
unrecognized as such because of the misleading title. An
excellent abridgment, comprehensive at the same time as 549
pages describe the Schlagintweits expedition. The other 90 pages
describe other expeditions in that region. The plates are
identical to those in the 4-volume set! - The expedition, the 4
Schlagintweit brothers carried out, may be considered as the
classic account on Central Asia. They crossed the main range
of the Himalaya, visited Cashmere, Ladakh and Baltistan,
crossed the Karakoram mountains as well as the high plateau of
Tibet and were the first Europeans to cross the Kunlun. Within
the text (pp. 621-628) the ‘road-tables’ from 1854 upto 1857.
Contemporary half cloth with gilt spine-lettering. Spine a bit
sunned, spine-ends slightly rubbed and bumped. Bookmark

1838, in-folio, (56x40 cm.), 25 grandes planches lithogr.,
dont le titre et 24 planches de vues, qqs rousseurs, reliure
originale en demi-maroquin vert aux coins, dos à 6 nerfs,
richement orné dans les compartiments. Tranches dorées.
Coiffe sup. restaurée, très bel exemplaire (rel. signée P &

Superbes planches lithographiques à
deux tons dessinées d’après nature et
datées entre 1837-1838. L’album complet
est très rare, puisque la variété des
vues topographiques et leurs lieux
géographiques font que cet album fut
très convoité pendant de longues années
par les marchands d’estampes,
afin de vendre les gravures à la pièce.
Ce grand dessinateur né à Bordeaux
en 1802, était le fils d’un banquier
à Paris, mort à Lausanne en 1876. Il
fut élève de Rod. Töpffer, Calame et
de l’aquarelliste anglais Harding. Ses
dessins sont plein de détails, animés et
remarquables dans leurs compositions.
‘Dessinateur, aquarelliste et peintre de
talent dont l’oeuvre considérable est
encore presque inconnue en Suisse’
(DHBS). Tirée par les impr. lithogr.
de C. Adrien et C. Richter les 25 vues
représentent: 4 vues de Genève / 4
du Ct. de Vaud / 3 Ct. du Valais (e.a.:
Sion, St. Maurice) / 7 vues de Savoie
(e.a.: Sallenches, Mont Blanc, Bonneville)
et 8 vues de Fribourg. Pour les
planches originales 17, 23, 24, 25 les
rousseurs sont plus abondantes.
Rarely found complete, 4 plates with stains, the others in fine
condition. Original 3/4 green morocco binding. I haven’t seen
a complete copy in 35 years, and most, if not all, the Swiss libraries
