Ô combien le baroud a causé de malheurs aux hommes !
Combien de cavaliers sont tombés au son de sa détonation !
Les descendants d’Adam et Eve ne pèsent pas lourd,
il suffit d’une étincelle pour incendier des villes entières.
Khalil :
Assez de chants et d’atermoiements. Assez d’alignements de mots ;
qu’avons-nous à y gagner ? Les gens ont sommeil
et nous, nous disputons encore.
Il est déjà huit heures 21 , on commence à fermer l’arène.
L’étranger :
Je ne quitterai pas ce lieu que tu as si bien arrangé,
sans une attestation formelle, garantie par toi,
doublée d’un certificat, estampillée et portant ta signature,
reconnaissant que, depuis ma naissance,
je suis le poète qui a envoûté les Arabes.
Khalil :
Regarde-moi bien et dis-moi qui tu es,
de quelle famille, de quel village, et quelle est ta religion ?
Et reçois un certificat signé ; je te le donne bien volontiers
sans procès, ni code, ni juge, ni tribunal.
The Stranger:
O how much misfortune has fighting caused to men!
How many riders have fallen at the sound of its detonation!
The descendants of Adam and Eve do not count for much.
All it takes is a spark to burn down entire cities.
Khalil:
Enough songs and prevarications. Enough alignments of words;
what do we stand to gain here? People are sleep,
and we are still arguing. It is already eight o’clock 1 ,
they are beginning to close the arena.
The Stranger:
I shall not leave this place, which you have arranged so well,
without a formal attestation, guaranteed by you,
along with a certificate, stamped and bearing your signature,
acknowledging that, since my birth, I am the poet who has bewitched the Arabs.
Khalil:
Look closely at me and tell me who you are—
from what family, from what village, and what is your religion—
and receive a signed certificate. I give it to you quite willingly
without proceedings or code, judge, or court.
