Fadia Tomb el-Hage
Fadia Tomb El-Hage comes from a family of
musicians and painters.
In 1979, she began drawing attention for
her interpretations of works by the Rahbani
brothers. Becoming fascinated by classical
music, she studied voice at the National
Conservatory in Beirut (1981-84) whilst pursuing
studies at Lebanese University, where
she earned a degree in psychology. After
that, she enrolled at the Richard Strauss
Konservatorium in Germany, studying classical
singing with Professor Felix Rolke
(1985-90), then specialising for two years in
oratorio techniques.
For her first appearance as a soloist, she interpreted
six Lieder by the composer Alfred
von Beckerath (recorded in Stuttgart in
1988). She then met Vladimir Ivanoff, the
Bulgarian-born German composer and
founder of the ensemble Sarband, a reference
in mediaeval music.
Gabriel Yammine
A Lebanese stage director and an actor,
Gilbert Yamine is one of the main figures
among the young generation of the Arab
world artists. In particular, he has been
staging on TV and at the theatre in Lebanon,
playing comic and popular characters.
Her knowledge of oriental and occidental
chants enabled Fadia to become the soloist
of the ensemble, crisscrossing the globe for
festival appearances, including the 1998
Baalbeck (Lebanon) Festival.
At that time, she began working with composers
from her native land, performing, in
particular, Zad Moultaka’s Anashid, which
inaugurated the Baalbeck International Festival
in 2000.
Fadia Tomb El-Hage collaborates increasingly
with international ensembles in order
to revitalise the musical heritage of both
the western and eastern repertoires. Since
2002, she has travelled the world, interpreting
both contemporary and early music,
Syriac music and the finest examples of Lebanese
folklore.
He is the guest of many cinema festivals
around the world, especially in Machreq
and Maghreb.
He teaches theater at the Lebanese University
where he was taught during the
war period.
Philippe Nahon
Born in 1946, Philippe Nahon veered toward
orchestra conducting following his
studies in art and piano. He has trained
with Louis Fourestier, Jean-Sébastien Béreau,
Pierre Dervaux, Roberto Benzi, and
taken part in a workshop led by Herbert
Von Karajan.
His collaboration with Marius Constant
launched an exciting era of discovery in the
tion and to promote music and musical
ventures by giving them a theatrical slant.
Under the baton of Philippe Nahon, the Ars
Nova Ensemble has evolved into one of today's
most ardent advocates for aesthetic
pluralism in contemporary music creation.
Made up of 26 highly talented musicians,
the ensemble is committed to encouraging
encounters and exchange among artists,
and between artists and the public. Their
goal is twofold: creation and transmission.
By applying a daring policy regarding commissions,
the Ars Nova Ensemble lays emphasis
on close-knit and long-term
fields of contemporary music, jazz, improvisation,
happenings and experimental
theater. His encounter with Peter Brook
soon got him hooked onto the path of exploring
the infinite creative possibilities
that infuse the interrelated realms of
music, theater, dance, circus…
Currently the Music Director of the Ars Nova
Instrumental Ensemble, Philippe Nahon
continues to advocate contemporary crea-
Ars Nova ensemble instrumental
collaboration with a wide spectrum of composers
(G. Aperghis, L. Berio, B. Cavanna, P.
Dusapin, L. Ferrari, S. Kassap, Z. Moultaka,
A. Markeas…).
The ensemble boasts about 40 concerts per
year, as well as opera productions and multidisciplinary
shows, with performances in
France and abroad in major national theaters
and renowned festivals dedicated to
the ever-growing contemporary repertoire.
In addition, Ars Nova devises various activities
around their performances. These activities
are geared toward awareness and
education, and aim to bring the public closer
to today's music.
