Rencontre du mois Offrir les meilleurs MBA, pour les Luxembourgeois et les étrangers Petit aperçu de la vie d’un Allemand, qui a fait ses études en Suisse, son doctorat aux Etats-Unis, qui a été professeur en Belgique et en Italie, mais aussi conseiller à la Commission Européenne et directeur de la Banque Européenne d’Investissement: le Dr Alfred Steinherr, Academic Director and Professor à la Sacred Heart University de Luxembourg nous explique dans cette interview sa passion pour l’enseignement. “ Dans ce métier, on n’est pas une roue dans une grande machine, comme dans la plupart des emplois ” En tant que directeur académique d’une université, quelles sont vos aspirations actuellement? De quoi rêve-t-on lorsque l’on a atteint un tel poste? On rêve de rendre l’enseignement que nous offrons encore meilleur, en trouvant toujours des professeurs engagés, qui apportent quelque chose d’unique, en combinant leurs connaissances académiques avec une expérience réelle de la pratique. Dans un monde qui change très rapidement, il faut également être très attentif à revoir le contenu des cours presque constamment, pour toujours être près de la frontière du savoir. Il faut être continuellement en contact avec le monde des affaires, pour refléter non seulement ce qui existe aujourd’hui, mais pour se préparer à confronter le futur. Vous avez eu de nombreuses casquettes durant votre carrière: consultant au FMI, conseillé à la commission européenne, directeur de la banque européenne d’investissement, conseillé de gouvernements tel que celui du Kazakhstan et des Emirats Arabes Unis,… Pourquoi vous êtes-vous tourné vers l’enseignement plus particulièrement? Après mon doctorat en économie, j’ai commencé à travailler comme professeur d’université. L’attrait d’une telle carrièred’une part, c’est l’indépendance: on n’a pas un chef direct. Deuxièmement, on a la possibilité d’avoir un impact: on peut donner quelque chose aux générations qui suivent. De plus si on a l’esprit curieux, le travail consiste en grande partie à faire de la recherche. L’amour propre est aussi un facteur parce que si on est plus malin que la plupart des autres on a la possibilité de se faireun nom. Dans ce métier, on n’est pas une roue dans une grande machine, comme dans la plupart des emplois. On est un individu en compétition pour le succès. Pourquoi et comment vous êtes-vous retrouvé à la Sacred Heart University plutôt qu’ailleurs? Quelle est la spécificité de cette université? J’ai commencé à enseigner ici en 2004. Et je dirige le programme depuis quatre ans. La Sacred Heart offre un MBA, un Master in Business Administration. Le public: des personnes qui travaillent déjà, qui ont fait des études de base, et qui veulent mieux se positionner dans leur carrière. Pour bien enseigner dans un tel programme, il faut avoir une bonne base théorique, mais aussi de l’expérience pratique. Au fil des années j’ai accumulé les deux. J’ai eu des phases dans ma vie où j’étais uniquement professeur, puis des phases ou j’étais uniquement banquier, et parfois même en même temps. J’étais donc idéalement positionné pour faire ce genre de choses.
