IntroductionThe ICCAT/JAPAN Data Improvement Project (JDIP) finished its five-year activities at the end of November2009, thanks to great support extended by many people, in particular, the course instructors, the host countriesand the institutions of the training courses/workshops.As the Government of Japan announced in its letter to all the CPCs (ICCAT Circular #024/<strong>2010</strong>), Japanprovided funds to ICCAT to implement a new five-year Project <strong>for</strong> the Improvement of Data and Managementof Tuna Fisheries (JDMIP) which covers a broader range of issues than the JDIP. The major objective of the newproject is to assist developing CPCs to effectively implement ICCAT measures including those related to themonitoring, control and surveillance of tuna fishing activities as well as the improvement of data collection,analysis and reporting, taking over the previous project.This report provides details of the activities carried out in the first year of the JDMIP 1 . The final report of theprevious five-year project “JDIP” which summarizes all the activities and the results attained during its five-year<strong>period</strong> is available in SCRS/<strong>2010</strong>/032.2. Project activities in <strong>2010</strong>2.1 Steering CommitteeThe Project has a Steering Committee comprised of the SCRS Chairman, the Convener of the Sub-Committee onStatistics, the ICCAT Secretariat and the donor State to provide overall guidance in implementing the projectactivities.The first meeting of the Steering Committee was held on November 7, 2009. The Committee reviewed thegeneral principles and worklpan <strong>for</strong> five-year <strong>period</strong>, and discussed possible activities to be financed by theJDMIP in the early stage of its five-year project term.2.2 Training ProgramsThe JDMIP finances the implementation of ICCAT training courses and regional workshops in order to provideopportunities <strong>for</strong> scientists and technicians of developing CPCs to acquire and rein<strong>for</strong>ce their knowledge andskills related to their work <strong>for</strong> the conservation and management of the species under ICCAT mandate.2.2.1 Regional Workshop in DakarThe JDMIP, jointly with the Data Fund, financed a regional training workshop in Dakar, Senegal from May 10to 14, <strong>for</strong> the improvement of tuna statistics with an emphasis on the improvement of tuna sampling, asrecommended by the SCRS at its 2009 meeting.A total of 14 participants attended the workshop from Angola, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea,Republic of Guinea, Mauritania, Sao Tome & Principe and Senegal. Three experts, Renaud Pianet, Taib Dioufand Papa Kebe served as instructors <strong>for</strong> the course. The workshop was evaluated favorably by participants <strong>for</strong>the importance and usefulness of the topics covered by the workshop which would be applicable in theirprofessional work.1 Updated as of September 17, <strong>2010</strong>.122
