Une espèce extraordinaire
découverte à macolline
Une espèce nouvelle pour la science est
formellement décrite et nommée Clerodendrum
kamhyoae Phillipson & Allorge. C'est la troisième
espèce de Clerodendrum L. (Lamiaceae) à
Madagascar qui combine un long tube de corolle
mince avec la cauliflorie (la production de fleurs et de fruits
directement à partir des branches ou des troncs des plantes
ligneuses ou tropicales), attributs peu communs dans le
genre. La production prolifique de fleurs le long du tronc de
la nouvelle espèce est tout à fait extraordinaire.
Les informateurs locaux ont indiqué le nom
"Saguiramantogoro" pour l'arbre. Dans le dialecte local
Betsimisaraka, "saguira" est un bâton ou un bâton, et
"mantogoro" est un serpent, se référant à l'écorce lisse, qui
ressemble à une espèce de serpent qui est commun dans la
région.
Les caractéristiques florales, en particulier le pétale blanc
avec son long tube fin, la production de copieux nectar
et les fines étamines saillantes et le style, représentent
clairement le syndrome adaptatif caractéristique pour
la pollinisation par les mites, et en particulier, étant
donné la grande taille des fleurs, par les mites de faucon
(Lepidoptera, famille: Sphingidae).
Cette nouvelle espèce fleurit à partir de fin mars à fin juin
et porte le nom de Marie-Hélène Kam Hyo Zschocke qui l'a
découverte au parc botanique Macolline à Antalaha.
Les petits arbres abondants sont une vue extraordinaire
au sommet de la saison de floraison, chaque tronc vêtu
de longues fleurs blanches élégantes avec leurs étamines
violettes délicates. Marie Hélène a surnommée l'arbre
"Lamariée".

A
species new to science is formally described
and named as Clerodendrum kamhyoae by
Phillipson & Allorge. It is the third species of
Clerodendrum L. (Lamiaceae) to be described
from Madagascar that combines a long
slender corolla tube with cauliflory (the production of
flowers and fruits directly from the branches or trunks of
woody or tropical plants), attributes that are uncommon
in the genus. The prolific production of flowers along the
trunk of the new species is quite extraordinary.
Local informants have indicated the name
“Saguiramantogoro” for the tree. In the local Betsimisaraka
dialect, “saguira” is a stick or baton, and “mantogoro” is
a snake, referring to the smooth bark, which resembles a
species of snake that is common in the region.
The floral characteristics, specifically the white petal
with its long fine tube, the production of copious nectar,
and the fine protruding stamens and style, clearly
represent the characteristic adaptive syndrome for
pollination by moths, and in particular, given the large
size of the flowers, by hawk moths (Lepidoptera, family :
Sphingidae).
This new species blooms from the end of March to the
end of June and is named in honour of Marie-Hélène
Kam Hyo Zschocke who made the discovery at Macolline
Botanical Park in Antalaha.
The abundant small trees are an extraordinary sight at the
peak of the flowering season, each trunk clothed with long
elegant white flowers with their delicate protruding purple
