Site uniquement accessible
par voie fluviale, Benjavilo est
réputé pour la pureté de son
air, la tranquillité et le côté
verdoyant de sa végétation. Un cadre
idéal pour des vacances au naturel.
Benjavilo est situé dans la région
Melaky, district d’Antsalova, commune
de Masoarivo.
On y accède en 4 heures de vedette
rapide depuis Maintirano, (chef-lieu de
région) et en 5 heures depuis Belo /
Tsiribihina.
Anciennement on appelait ce
village « Beanjavily » car on y trouve
de l’Anjavily (une plante indicatrice
de fertilité). Mais « Benjavilo » est le
nouveau nom officiel.
Restauration des mangroves
Cette partie du littoral ouest
malgache figure parmi les zones
d’intervention de WWF Madagascar.
Un projet de restauration et de gestion
communautaire des mangroves de la
Manambolo, un fleuve long de 370 km,
a été mis en place.
Le passage dans cette partie de la
région Melaky à partir d’Ankatsaho
démontre bien l’évolution des actions
de conservation. Dans les années
1950, on y pratiquait la riziculture.
Quelques pieds de palétuviers ont
survécu au défrichement et des
mangroves se retrouvent ensablées
puisque les palétuviers ne résistent
plus aux sables qui les étouffent. Ils
sont alors destinés à être utilisés
comme bois de chauffe afin de les
revaloriser.
Avant d’arriver à Benjavilo, en
poursuivant le chenal et une fois le
village d’Amboanio passé, on pourra
apercevoir différentes parcelles
constituées de propagules de quelques
semaines, des arbustes de quelques
mois, des palétuviers de quelques
années… A Antanandahy, on peut
observer une forêt de 10 ans de l'îlot

baptisé Nosimbagna (ilot des aigrettes,
vana=aigrette).
Grâce aux efforts de la communauté
et du Fonds Mondial pour la nature,
l’écosystème dans ces lieux a
été préservé et des mesures
d’accompagnement ont été prises
comme une sensibilisation à la pêche
durable.

Benjavilo is located in the Melaky
region, district of Antsalova,
municipality of Masoarivo.
It can be reached in 4 hours by
speedboat from Maintirano, (chief
town of region) and in 5 hours from
Belo / Tsiribihina.
Formerly this village was called
"Beanjavily", because of the
occurrence of Anjavily (a plant
indicating fertility). But "Benjavilo" is
the new official name.
Mangrove restoration
This part of the western Malagasy
coastline is part of the intervention
area of WWF Madagascar. Here

mangroves along the Manambolo, a
370 km long river, has been set up.
By passing through this part of the
Melaky region from Ankatsaho, the
evolution of conservation actions
become obvious. In the 1950ies, there
was rice growing. Few mangrove
stands had survived clearing and the
few remaining ones are became silted
as these mangroves could no longer
resist the sands suffocating them.
They were considered as nothing more
than good as firewood then.

Amboanio has been past, we can
see the different plots consisting of
propagules of a few weeks, shrubs
of a few months, and mangroves a
few years old... At Antanandahy, we
can observe the results after 10 years
of reforestation at the islette called
Nosimbagna (Île aux Aigrettes).
Thanks to the efforts of the
community and the Global Fund for
Nature, the ecosystem in these places
has been preserved and accompanying
measures have been taken like
rising the awareness for sustainable
fisheries.
