Magnesio carbonato / Magnesium
carbonate
Caratteristiche
L’utilizzo del magnesio carbonato nel
settore ceramico è abbastanza recente.
In effetti si fa uso di magnesio carbonato
in alcune situazioni specifiche: o come
opacizzante di smalti “bianco Sassuolo”,
in modo da ottenere superfici opacizzate
e vellutate, oppure come agente fondente
su serigrafie spessorate, oppure come
fondente negli impasti, o nell’engobio
dei rulli ceramici.
Negli smalti lucidi, aggiunto in percentuali
minime, circa 5%, esso produce un
effetto opacizzante e vellutato che valorizza
lo smalto e lo rende carezzevole e
leggero al tatto. E’ molto importante, in
adatto a questi usi.
Nell’engobio dei rulli, come agente distaccante,
il magnesio carbonato, denominato
impropriamente “magnesite” , si
utilizza assieme a caolino e ad allumina,
in certi casi. Una buona percentuale di
magnesite ed un 10 % di caolino costituiscono
un buon eutettico che serve a
tenere distaccate le piastrelle , durante la
cottura, dai rulli.
Come accennato, noi curiamo questo
prodotto direttamente dalla cava, situata
al centro della Turchia anatolica. Le cave
della West Park Mining, sono di ottimo
glivello quantitativo e qualitativo. Giornalmente
questo prodotto viene controllato
da geologi esperti e granulato in forma
di 1 millimetro circa. Questo permette
di mantenere uniforme la qualità, ma
soprattutto non avere polvere che provocherebbe
lesioni all’atto dell’apertura dei
sacchi. Possiamo fornire questo materiale
direttamente in big bags, oppure in
sacchi da 25 kg per facilitare la formulazione
degli engobi.
Technical features
Magnesium carbonate has only recently
started to be used in the ceramics
industry. In fact, magnesium carbonate is
used in only some specific situations:
either as a matting agent for “Sassuolo
white” glazes, to obtain a velvet, dulled
surface, or as a fluxing agent for shimmed
screen-prints, or as flux for mixtures, or in
ceramic roller engobes.
Added in very low percentages - about
5% - to glossy glazes, it has a dulling,
velvety effect to increase the richness of
the glaze and to make it light and pleasing
to touch. For this use, it is very important
to ensure the correct dosage, but above all
to use pure magnesium carbonate, free of
dolomite and with very little free quartz,
to reduce the surface tapping as much as
possible. As a flux for mixtures,
magnesium carbonate is very strong, so in
comparison to talc it needs to be added in
smaller percentages, but above all, as in
the case of glazes, it must be free of all
other components. Our magnesium
carbonate comes from the West Park
Mining quarries in Turkey, and is
particularly pure and thus very much
suited to this kind of use.
As a parting agent in roller engobes,
magnesium carbonate - improperly
referred to as “magnesite” - is in some
cases used together with kaolin and
alumina. A mixture of high percentage
magnesite and 10 % kaolin makes a good
eutectic, to keep the tiles from sticking to
the rollers during firing.
As mentioned before, we follow this
product straight from the quarry, which is
located in the centre of Anatolian Turkey.
The West Park Mining quarries have an
excellent production level, in terms of
both quality and quantity.
The product is checked by expert geologists
on a daily basis and granulated to
approximately 1 millimetre. This allows
for a uniform quality, but above all to
avoid powder, which could cause injury
when opening the sacks. This material
can be supplied directly in big bags, or in
25 kg sacks for easy engobe preparation.
