IntroductionEnglishThe <strong>Hollandse</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s vision statement reflects the importance weplace on English as a subject throughout the school.English is taught by a team of 5 native English speakers, who followa detailed and systematic English Curriculum. This has beendevised specifically for the <strong>Hollandse</strong> <strong>School</strong> and it ensures thatthere is a consistent, coordinated and thorough approach.The two main goals of the English Curriculum are:• To introduce English to young children so they can expressthemselves confidently in everyday situations. In Jip andJanneke, the children are exposed to English on daily basisthrough the presence of an English speaking teacher.• To prepare the students for international secondary school.The time devoted to English lessons during school hours is asfollows:Lessons per group (per week):Group 1 2 x 30 minutesGroup 2 2 x 30 minutesGroup 3 2 x 30 minutesGroup 4 2 x 45 minutesGroup 5 2 x 45 minutesGroup 6 3 x 45 minutesGroup 7 4 x 45 minutesGroup 8 4 x 45 minutesAll classes are split into two mixed-ability groups for English so thatthe typical class size is between 6 and 12 children. Each class istaught simultaneously by two different teachers in two locations,but following the same programme. Differentiation takes placewithin the group to cater for individual needs.In addition to timetabled lessons, we offer extra-curricular lessonsafter school hours, in ability groups. In the event that additionalhome tuition is required, the school maintains a panel of suitablerecommended tutors.Children from Groups 4 to 8, arriving in <strong>Singapore</strong> with no little or noprior exposure English, are offered a special after school class freeof charge for one term. This will help them to gain confidence inspeaking English and to integrate more quickly into the main classactivities.It is also recommended, where possible, that new students with noexperience in the English language take English lessons prior to54
