REGATTAS
RELAUNCH CONFIRMED
By the hand of Clube Naval de Cascais, a class that was once Olympic
has been revived in Portugal. This year marked the second National
Championship in this new era of the class on Portuguese territory.
The competition was entirely dominated by sailors from CNCascais,
with Filipe Silva being crowned as the new national champion
A
class that was once Olympic, and
not only evokes fond memories in
numerous sailors from the “longest-standing
youth” group, but also continues to be
enjoyed by many others, regardless of their
age. It can be said that the Finn class went
through a kind of “hibernation period” in
Portugal. At least until 2021, when Clube
Naval de Cascais decided to relaunch the
class and give it a new life, thereby meeting
the aspirations of several of its loyal
followers.
It was in this context that Clube Naval
de Cascais organized the 2023 edition of
the National Championship of the Finn
Class, the second one in this new era, during
the last weekend of November. Eleven
boats were in competition in the waters
of Cascais, nine of which were crewed by
sailors from CNCascais. Unfortunately, the
absence of wind conditions prevented the
races from taking place on the second day
of the competition, which naturally resulted
in the final classification being based on
the results obtained on the previous day.
On Saturday, the wind blew from the
North quadrant with an intensity ranging
from 7-12 knots, allowing for the completion
of four races - the ones that would
ultimately determine the final standings.
The dominance unquestionably belonged
to Filipe Silva, a sailor from CNC, and the
2023 Master World Champion, who only
missed out on winning the second race
(finishing sixth, a result that he was able
to discard), and therefore he was crowned
