Various Islamic Monuments: A tie-beam from the revak of the GökMedrese in Tokat, collected fifteen years ago and untilnow not datable, canat last be dated to 1265 A.D. because of its fit with the Burdur wood. Timbersfrom alate building north of the içkaleat Alanya date from 1676ff.A set of stretchers from the Gök Medrese in Sivas collected last year do notdate from the primary phase of 1271 /1272 but with a last preserved ringat 1820 are probably from a reconstruction after the fire of 1824 whichdestroyed much of the superstructure of the medrese.Afyon, çay, Yusuf Bin Yakub Medrese: Measurements of 46 oak coresfrom this buildin.g sampled in 1989 form a 199-year long sequence that runsfrom 1070-1268. Early travelers! noted that the inscription over the portaleııded with the word "tarih", but no foundation years was given. Subsequentpublications- modified this inscription to read: "tarih: 677" [Hicri] or A.D.1278. Our best guess for this change is that the date of the adjoining kervansaraywhich reads eirher 657 (Sarre and Huart) or 677 (Erdrnann) was copiedinsomebody's notebook to include the medrese as well. At any rate, thedendrochronological date for the medrese with the bark preserved is 1268or ten years earlier (or latcr) than the inscriptional date(s) for the kervansaray-.Gordion: Now that the University of Penssylvania excavations haveresumed after a hiatus of i 5 years, we were able to accomplish two thingswhich have been in suspension at this important site siııce Professor RodneyYOUııg'S death in 1974. The first was a continuec1 examination of the logsfrom the Midas Mound Tumulus, and here three results are worthy ofmentiorı:1. We have doubled to 24 the number of juniper logs samples, particularlyimportant for chronology-building siııce their average life-span was500-600 years. One of the newly-collected speciıııens was 918 years old whenit was cnt down in the Iate 8th century Re.(l)element Huart, "Epigraphie arabc d'Asie Mineure," Revue Sdnıitique d'Epigraplıie et d'HistoireAııcieııne 2 (894) pp. 74-75; Friedrich Sarre, Reise in Kleniasien (Berlin, 1896), p. 19.Both these early travelers give the date for the adjcining Haıı as 657 Hicri or J258. Wc thankProfessor David Powers, Department of Near Bastern Studies, Corncil University, for conf'irmingthis reading on the medrese inscription.(2) Kurt Erdıuann, Das Anatolische Karavansaray des 13. Jahrlııınderts (Berlin, 19(1), p. 149with bibliography On p. 150. Here the datc for the adjoining han is given as 677 Hicri or 1278.(3) To makc matters evcn morc confusing, the camii vakfi has pIaecd II modern woodcn signon the front door of the medrese that reads 1258.130
