Otto Zitko *1959 in Linz; lebt und arbeitet in Wien
Es sind die großen, entfesselten Farbexplosionen, die sich
auf den Wänden hoch über der Veranstaltungsetage ereignen.
Die roten oder grünen Striche wirken nervös, hektisch,
unbeherrscht, fast infantil. Otto Zitkos Wandgemälde, die
er mit Ölstiften besorgt, entstehen oft in einem architektonischen
Umfeld wie hier auf der Galerie. Die Linie wird in
diesem Kontext ganz autonom. Sie denkt sich aus, nimmt
eine räumliche Struktur an und wird zu einem Triumph des
Menschen über die Technik. Sein Lehrer Peter Weibel, bei
dem er an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien
studierte, sagt über ihn: „Seine graphischen Gesten berichten
von Verzweiflung und Wut, seine Linien sind Nachrichten
aus körperlichen Reisen durch Gelenke, Sehnen, Muskeln
und Nerven. Er verliert sich tatsächlich im Strich- und Farbenwald.“
Otto Zitko gilt unter den Malern als Verweigerer,
als ein Avantgardist zwischen Realismus und Abstraktion. Er
argumentiert in der Zeichnung von der Kommandohöhe der
Malerei aus. Seit den 1980er Jahren setzt er sich damit auseinander
und belegt immer wieder, dass die Zeichnung keine
Vorstudie zur Malerei ist. Zitkos Graphismus ist Extase und
unbedingte Freiheit. Seine Ursprünglichkeit in der Kunst führt
ihn auf den Weg der Wahrheit und der Erkenntnis. Insofern
gehört Otto Zitko sicherlich zu den ungewöhnlichsten Künstlern,
die im Grand Hyatt Berlin zu sehen sind und für den es
lohnt, den Blick zu heben.

The vast explosions of colour that own the space on the
walls high above the 1st floor along with the red and green
lines turning themselves in spirals and whirls seem nervous,
uncontrolled and childish somehow. Just as here in the gallery
of Grand Hyatt Berlin, Otto Zitko’s wall paintings are created
using thick oil crayons, often in an architecturally impressive
setting where the lines come to life. They contemplate
their own purpose, take on a physical form and turn into a
triumph of man over technology. Zitko’s teacher Peter Weibel
at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna once said about
Zitko: “His graphical gestures express despair and rage; his
lines are stories of an expedition through the body’s joints,
tendons, muscles and nerves. He very much loses himself in
the universe of lines and colours.” Otto Zitko is no ordinary
artist but takes an avant-garde position between realism and
abstractionism. Wanting to strike a blow for drawing, Zitko
has tried since the 1980s to prove that the medium is not just
useful for doing preliminary sketches for paintings. Zitko’s
artistic language represents unconditional freedom and the
originality of his art leads him towards truth and insight. Otto
Zitko is one of the most unusual artists that we showcase at
Grand Hyatt Berlin and undoubtedly one whose works are
worth a glance, or three.
